I never really notice a big difference between so called high nic and low nic blends. Unless it's in a extreme sized pipe like a super small or super large chambered pipe. Just one of those stray thoughts about pipes. But if I smoke a really low octane blend in a tiny pipe I'll still feel like I need more, or if I smoke something strong I'll feel like wow that's strong. But in an average sized pipe I can't tell much difference. Probably just me.

I would put pipe tobacco on a bell curve. Which is to say, I rarely notice the nicotine either way for most blends. There are fewer examples that really stick out for their lack strength, usually American-style aromatics and Latakia blends. There are even fewer blends, probably, that stick out for their formidable strength, generally your English dark flakes, and a select few options made by Cornell & Diehl and MacBaren. Just my two cents, of course.

I am super sensitive to nicotine, I notice its effects (mental stimulation, altered state of consciousness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, throat constriction, etc) even from low nic blends. I like the flavours of strong blends and smoke them often, but generally use smaller pipes or smoke a bowl in intervals over the course of a day or two. No Gawith twists while driving haha.

The question must be asked. Do you inhale? I don't so it's not an issue for me.
No. But I retro every single puff. In it goes and out the nose. Actually, out of the mouth and nose simultaneously.

So the other day, I accepted one of those anisette Italian cigars from my host. I treated it as I would my pipe..... let me tell you, I’d like to die from the pain that caused my nasal passages.
Never again, Edger. Lol

I don’t experience nicotine from granger, just a mild smoke with a flavor I thoroughly enjoy. If I smoke C&D burley blends, yes. I’ll feel the nicotine.

on edit. And a bit of nose tinge from C&D. I have an appreciation for mild tobaccos.

I almost always smoke after a meal but even then I've had a couple of blends that sat me back on my butt getting off the chair after a smoke. Plus the nausea and head spin.

I find that smoking them in a gourd calabash eliminates that problem. Plus smoking a lot more slowly and sipping.

Yeah, I have to stay away from C&D burleys since I'm a nic wimp. The only blend that contains burley that I can handle is Three Friars, and I quite like that. I don't enjoy retrohaling either. I just get what wisps go up my nose from the bowl and puffing. I get the taste of the tobacco in my mouth but it's really just acting as a"bellows" to keep my pipe lit.

I don't inhale and rarely do the retro hale, taste is my thing I don't seem to get any nic problems even when I smoke strong flakes and twists but I always use small bowl pipes. The only exception has been Erinmore flake a full burley blend which I do enjoy but it does knock me sideways if I smoke a normal sized bowl in one go.

Inhale, probably some, but not on purpose, and definitely not in the same way as smoking cigs. Retro often/always. Most blends are not really noticeable for nic content to me. My most recent that was is the Windjammer, nicotine is in there for sure. One of the few blends I don't smoke on an empty stomach, lol. I used to be a 2 tin a day Skoal/Cope guy for years, nicotine and I are good friends. I still wish they bring back the Cope black, mid cut bourbon flavor.

I don't inhale, and I used to smoke cigs. When I smoked cigarettes my first morning smoke would give me a massive head rush every single time, even after smoking for 4 years.
Even after 40 years, Marlboro Red gives good dose of head rush first thing in the morning. I have to sit down for that. Haven't had one since before Christmas.

The only time I've ever noticed any effect from nicotine was the one time I felt sick to my stomach after smoking a strong cigar. Oh ... and of course the few times I dipped Kodiak as a teenager.

I smoke Old Dark Fired and Irish Flake at least once a week and never notice a thing despite their reputation for being somewhat "strong". My money says that I get an occasional nic hit and just don't notice it. My wife would tell you that I'm not the most observant of guy out there and I'm inclined to believe her when it comes to that.

What are the effects of nicotine anyway? No offense to anyone here, but some of those listed in this thread seem rather far fetched. Massive head rush, altered state of consciousness, mental stimulation ... really?
