Aloha everyone,

I had a question I thought I’d pose to you all. I’ll lay out the background. First, I do not smoke a pipe for the nicotine, but I definitely don’t mind it. With that out of the way, the other day a friend and I were discussing different blends. We began talking about the nicotine content in specific blends. We soon realized that certain blends affect us both differently. For example, he noted that Irish flake had a high nicotine content for him, yet I notice almost no nicotine in the blend. However, a blend like ODF really packs a punch for me and not for him. I was curious why, or how we both experience the nicotine in these blends so differently. This has happened with many blends, and this is just one example.

also when people talk about nicotine and it's effects they're talking about all the chemicals in the leaf as well. Untop of that all tobacco has enough nicotine to mess you up badly but our bodies are pretty terrible at absorbing it. Often our idea of strength isn't just amount but how readily our bodies take the nicotine and other things in tobacco (harmaline is well known one) how much and how quickly. And the thing is a lot of things factor into this many obvious many not so obvious.

Very interesting. Thanks.

All above is correct, but add in how you smoke as a variable also. When I find a blend that I love the taste, I tend to slow down to savor it. The slower I smoke, the more time that smoke has to be absorbed. If someone happens to just speed up or make more smoke, maybe billowing clouds into the air, the less smoke they are giving time to be absorbed, and the nicotine is just wasted into the air.

We all have different tollerances. I'm large-ish (6'3" 240 pounds), a big bold Nicaraguan cigar can't knock me over (except for when it isnt rested properly like one time happened), 1 flake of ODF smoked in a normal non-hot smoke pace knocks me off my socks period (especially when its to dry, somehow).

just to make it more confusing. Puffing like a freight train can make the lesser amount absorb faster. Closer to what a cig does.

Fascinating conversation. I'm not a nicotine heavyweight by any measure, but I had no problem with Nightcap when I first started. Looking back it may have been me smoking fast that saved my butt haha

From all the feedback it appears that the variables are endless. @anotherbob makes an interesting point about quicker puffing results in a quicker onset with less absorbed. Slow puffing results in a slower onset but more absorbed like you noted. I never thought about it in that manner.
