Not to brag but I've built up a pretty strong tolerance to Lady N over the years. Discounting my years that I smoked cigs I have smoked many great cigars, had a bout with chewing tobacco and have even stuffed my pipes with XXX rope tobacco. The Niccups are not new to me and although never pleasant I had to share what I've just experienced. I'm on my porch enjoying my first bowl of the day (EMP) and I'm enjoying the mild spring weather, a gentle spring shower is falling, I'm reading and adding to this forum, life is good. I'm past the mid point in the smoke and it's right in the sweet spot that I so enjoy, pipe is barely lit and I'm clenching my Radice bent billiard just puffing along when for the first time in a long time it hits me. I'm hiccuping uncontrollably, I just start chuckling to myself because there's really nothing else I can do, right?
Just curious if it's got anything to do with clenching the pipe and if this why I often read where more seasoned pipe men claim that they no longer clench.
Comments and thoughts, please.

When I've gotten what I think are the niccups, I seem to only get two or three and then it's over, but I can't say for sure that they aren't just run of the mill hiccups.
I think many clenchers give it up because of the suggestions from dentists to move the pipe around, not to focus the smoke and heat on one area of the tongue or mouth. This makes us more vulnerable to mouth cancer. It's just hard to clench on the other side. But, if my choice is to give up clenching I will keep trying. However, all of the older pipe smokers I grew up with clenched till they left this world.
I have not heard that clenchers get niccups more often. But, there are lots of things that I've never heard before.

Well, I know the Niccups when I get them because with me at least, it's a pretty inconvenient and uncomfortable experience. With cigars for example, I would get them while casting flies to riding trout while chomping down and puffing on those full bodied double Maduros. You tend to get caught up in the moment in situations like that and it's easy to forget to be mindful of your smoking. Chewing tobacco and moist snuff? Hell, just swallow a little and you'll wonder if the hiccups will ever stop.
It's a rarity for me to experience it with the pipe and I exercise much more moderation with it as opposed to former nicotine delivery systems and that's why I was a little blundsided by it all. It obviously was directly related to my puffing cadence and the fact I was concentrating on something other than what was going on with my pipe other than the fact that I was enjoying the cowboy hell out of it.

I just take three or four quick swallows of water and they leave me be the rest of the smoke.

"Sip" drinking water whilst you "sip" your high-nic tobacco. In other words, slow down and have a drink (of whatever you like).

Huh, hadn't heard of the niccups phenomenon before this. I've noticed that I haven't suffered from hiccups since I quit dip.
