3 months into pipe smoking.
My birthday was this weekend and I received a 10% off from P&C and wife approved $60 gift. So I ordered me Grabow Golden Duke Smooth (my first briar), and StoneHenge, and Amphora Burley. I wanted Orlik Golden Slice but all sold out. I know I like Latakia and have been trialing those samples. I love that Smokey sweetness and am enjoying EMP and 965 very much.

Last night I tried Elizabethan Match which I think is a VaPer. I liked it but halfway through the back center of my tongue felt either tongue bite or peppery spiciness from the Perique? I don’t really know which because it’s the first time I have experienced it, but I prefer not to have that flavor/ feeling. Maybe I smoked too fast and it was tongue bite?

Again thanks to all for all the help and samples and support. I am loving this new hobby except for my wife smelling the Latakia on me. But she has been a really good sport so far.

Happy birthday and congrats on obtaining your first briar. You'll find a world of difference between hardwood pipes and corn cobs, which are more forgiving to new pipe smokers. As to your experience; it could have been that you didn't dry the Elizabethan out enough. Tongue bite can be caused by several things, but moisture is the most common, especially with Virginias.

Keep learning and keep smoking. Keep sharing too. It's a great way to assist others with their journey.

Congratulations on getting the first briar pipe! And happy birthday! ??? My experience is just opposite from yours. I started with briar pipes, but now i only smoke on my cob and meer. Ya, you will find it's really different between cob pipe and briar pipe, and even a straight stem and a bend stem also it feels different ?

Thanks. After I get my Briar I am going to dedicate it to Virginia - VaPer. I have quite a few samples to try. I can enjoy my Latakia and Burlies with my cobs.

How many pipes you have in total now?
I have 3 of the MM Gentlemen Cobs. One is for Latakia. I also have 2 of the $6 Cobs that are really small and one has a lose stem. Plus a cheap pear wood bent. My idea is as follows:

Small Cob - Codgers (non Latakia)
Pear Bent - Sweet Aromatics
Straight Gentlemen - Latakia Blends
Bent Gentlemen Black - Burley
Bent Gentlemen Amber - Va/Per
Grabow Briar - Virginias

Happy Birthday Brother,
What I’ve noticed is that it helps to dry your tobacco a little more with briars, cobs will absorb some excess moisture, briar doesn’t.
In case you didn’t already know, you can smoke burley in anything you want without worrying about ghosting,

A very Happy Birthday to you! You’ve already gotten some good advice above. Dry it out, pack it loose and sip your way through the bowl. Enjoy!

I found out by accident that I prefer the Elizabethan very dry.

I don't have any particular choice for tobacco, coz I'm still in the testing stage for the tobacco ? I can't get the tobacco tester in my country, so, each time I purchase, I can only test until the whole can finish ?. So, each purchase, I only get one type of tobacco, until it finished, then get another type. As for me, I only rotate two or three pipes, but smoke on the same tobacco. It's all personal preferences bro, don't worry ?
