Newby Here.. How Do I Store Tobacco?

Ok I got great feedback on starter tobacco. I will have about 6 or 7 brands off the bat. Some are pouches, some tins. I live in Houston where it is hot and humid.

My first idea is getting (see attached) some air tight sealed 8 oz jars. Store them in a dark box under a bed in a cool bedroom (eg 75 degrees).

Any suggestions on storage that works but won’t break the bank?

Given you are going to be trying a few blends, I’d say that’s the best way to go. When (not if) you start cellaring, you might look into Mylar bags.

the tins will be ok left sealed until you open them, but pouches are not exactly intended for storage

Yep, I concur with the above. Those jars should do nicely.

Those look like mason jars, which is generally how folks store their opened tins.

I keep most of mine sealed in the tins for ease of storage, but when opened I use those little masons and they work quite well.

Those look like mason jars, they can also be found in various sizes at your local Wal-Mart. Be sure to label the outside of the jar so you don't need to open it to discover the contents. You can find washable labels for mason jars, these will come off easily with a bit of water and soap when it's time to change blends. I normally also put the date acquired and a unique number on each container, along with the blend name that I then use to track the contents of my cellar. Overkill for 6-7 blends, but once you get past a couple dozen in the cellar a way to track the contents starts to pay off.

Yes, mason jars of various sized work well. I also use a foodsaver vacuum sealer to seal my jars. I usually keep a small amount in 4oz jars for daily use and use 8 & 16 oz jars to store blends for aging.

But, if you don't intend on smoking a bowl of it right away, don't crack the tin.
