Newbie here.

Best resources for history of tobacco, pipe smoking in general?

Oh, an intro.

Living in North Idaho, getting back into pipe smoking as the weather cools. My wife bought my first and only pipe (an estate shorty), but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Look forward to learning and sharing here.

Not a fan of pipe "teaching" videos - Almost without exception, they are too long.

Please put your location in your Profile, as people are forgetful.
Why: It will save time for others as to where you live when you mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos, wildfires, air quality, etc. In many instances that saves time for those who read your posts, and for you in not having to reply to inquiries. .
How:
Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details", which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down. Whatever you're comfortable with- town, city, county, state. province, etc.

Welcome!

In terms in how-to's, Per Georg Jensen has a slew of great videos on YouTube. A couple are under his own name but I highly suggest watching the ones under Mac Baren Master Blender as well. They're quick and informative.

Example:
]

For a comprehensive overview I can't recommend highly enough Iain Gately's book on the history of tobacco at large, entitled Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization.

You've come to the correct place.

Search around for threads with "newbie/beginner/advice" and you will have plenty to read.

Browse through retail shops online and use Pipedia.org as a reference.

There's a lot to take in at first, but it all falls in to place.

Most importantly - buy some sample size (1oz) bulk blends to learn about leaf varieties and blends. Before long you'll have a reasonable grasp on "Virginia/Perique/Burley/Latakia/Dark Fired Ky/Orientals" as well as "VaPer/English/Balkan/Aromatic/ETC".

If you progress a few steps and realize you're in to it, I bet there are forum members that would be happy to send you some samples too.
