If I smoke 10 boles a day then I would need 10 pipes but how long should I let each pipe rest and does this mean I would need 30 pipes in order to do a proper rotation?

Depends on how moist the tobacco is you're smoking, but usually a one day is rest is all that's needed.
It isn't terrible to reload and smoke a just finished pipe...especially if using the same tobacco. Moisture will accumulate a little faster and you'll be able to tell if the pipe is getting swampy by the smoking experience becoming a little off in taste.
Mostly, its personal preference.

While on rotation topic, what about if I smoke about 3-4 bowls a day, can I use the same pipe all day if I can give it a 7 or 8 day rest?

I have 8 pipes in my rotation and I use 2/day so a pipe gets to rest 5 days before next use but I also smoke just two bowls/day. I rarely finish one bowl in one go though.
However, there are exceptions to the rule. When I get a new pipe it usually becomes my "favorite" and only rests one day before next use. At the moment I don't have a favorite so it is getting time to get a new one. :)

I will smoke a pipe several times in a day, or sometimes exclusively for a week.

You will know when it needs some rest.

Each pipe is different, so just stuff-n-puff till it's time to let it rest.

Back in the good ole days, most pipe smokers only had 1 pipe. This pipe rotation thing comes from a society that micro analyzes everything and has way too much of everything. Here I go again....OK, I'll stop, only because it's Sunday..LOL

When I got my first pipe I must have smoked it 3 to 4 times a day for a week strait. I had never heard of resting your pipe. When it started smoking hot and wet and I would clean it out and let it rest for a few hours. It helped that I lived in a desert at the time.
Best advice I can give is when it is no longer enjoyable to smoke or it becomes too hot to comfortably hold give it a rest.

My routine most closely parallels Pstlpkr's. My pipes, about 15 low-end and mid-grades, chosen by whim rather than schedule,

have been able to handle a big smoking load: 6 - 8 bowls/day. When your pipe gets "sour", so to speak, you'll know it!

That's only happened to me one time, and it's an unforgettably vile experience.
I think it helps a lot to run a pipe cleaner or two through your pipe after every smoke. They then seem to need less rest

and periodic scouring -- which for me comes to about three times a year.

I clean my pipes after every smoke and do a cotton ball and alcohol treatment once every 6 smokes... except for a few pipes! I have three (well two now) pipes that I smoke all day when I take them out with me, and these get cleaned once a month or so!

Cotton balls don't turn a dark amber like salt does, so I guess you can say they don't work as well as salt.

But the clean-up is a whole lot easier, and it seems to sweeten the pipe to my satisfaction.

I'll never mess with salt again. Just cotton balls and Seagram's extra dry gin. (Cotton gin method? All y'all ! )

I always assumed the salt in the S&A method uses some chemical trickery to absorb "crap" from the pipe.
Would the cotton ball/alcohol treatment be safe for meerschaums? I know salt/alcohol isn't.

I don't think there's any exotic chemistry going on. To me it looks like the alcohol dissolves the tar,

and the salt (or cotton) traps it and evaporates. Salt is an effective trap because it doesn't dissolve in alcohol.
I dunno about doing this with meers.

Here's an old post from way back that may help.

Secondly, 10 bowls a day? Wow, I'd be wanting to rest and not even worry about the pipes.

Following the white rabbit
On a typical day I will smoke 10 or so bowls a day. On a typical day I rotate those smokes between 4 or 5 pipes. Some days I will smoke only 1 or 2 pipes all day, reloading as needed.
Just run a pipe cleaner through after each smoke to remove the excess moisture and you'll be fine.
I have a few pipes that are smoked almost every day and others that will rest a week before being smoked. I honestly see no difference in the smoking between them.
