Hi All,
New to these forums, but a veteran piper. Currently on the rooftop deck, looking at the city and smoking a Latakia from a basket pipe I bought at Draper’s recently.
Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Let me be the first to welcome you! We're all pretty warped, but for the most part this is a great group of men and women and we all have a great brotherhood going. Except for that guy chasingembers. He's an enabler, and we don't take kindly to those around here.

Welcome aboard! There is a wealth of information around here, just ask.
Two quick questions for you though; what's the backstory on your screen name? You wouldn't have small kids by any chance would you?

Many thanks for the greetings! I was, heretofore, unaware that I wanted a reverse calabash cob. But since it’s on the internet, it must be true!
Mike Thompson: No, my youngest is now twelve. Foggy Bottom is the neighborhood in which I live and work. Not as nice as my native Chicago. But it’s pretty darned great.

It sure has! The lack of humidity today is great. I went for a walk downtown this morning with some Draper’s 18 K. Just a nice walk on days like today.

Lack of humidity in DC?? Zounds!
Welcome, and fire away with observations, questions, quips, etc.
And fire up more latakia. It's what real men smoke.

I was in and out of D.C. and Bethesda on up the Metro line for years on business, and have mostly good memories of evenings scouting out events at the Kennedy Center and sometimes at the various museums. When I was there several times a year, the Metro was spiffy and new and running right on time. It was pleasant to ride and compensated for not having a car available. Even on limited per diem, the hotel rooms were civilized and pleasant and I liked various restaurants, notably The Red Sea, Ethiopian up around Georgetown, and a nice unpretentious Thai place in Bethesda town, among others. After years of passing it up, I finally caught the line short on a bleak chilly day and visited the top of the Washington Monument. I even stayed in a hotel in the foggybottom area once, and another time at the Mayflower near the National Zoo. J. Edgar Hoover used to breakfast at the Mayflower and his table is still pointed out. My all time favorite event, on vacation not business, was seeing Dizzy Gillespie at the jazz club The Blue Note way back in the Eighties. Okay there's my nostalgia tour of your city. Welcome aboard.

Mso— It’s a great city. Just expensive. And summers are brutal. I grew up in Chicago with no a/c, and I thought summers were bad there. Little did I know!
But I love two tabaco shops that are within walking distance from the apartment. And, as I said, I’m enjoying the weather today. (Walked out to G-town for some tobacco this afternoon.)
Thanks for the welcome!

Until about the mid-seventies, D.C. had the reputation of being pretty much a sleepy Southern city without much going on, a sort of federal government company town, but by the time I became familiar with it, it had come to life and had some international polish and vitality. My first real visit was a huge Smithsonian event celebrating the culture of India, with events indoors and out. I joked with my wife that they named The Air and Space museum because after a few hours in the crowds, all we wanted was air and space. I used to attend meetings at the Convention Center and in the evening enjoy the Museum of Women's Art and the excellent food in Chinatown. Hey, maybe I could get a contract writing tourist brochures! I'd have to update my knowledge. But it is a great city and yes, expensive! When I first started my visits, it was through National Airport, now known as Reagan International, I think.

Hiya, foggy, welcome! What, DC expensive? NEVER! }:) Why, I only paid $260/mo. for an efficiency apt on one of the Glebe Rds. in Arlandria, & that was only back 40 years ago! -sarcsnort-
I love DC, though it's just not the same anymore. If you ever get down Olde Towne way, tell my old buds at John Crouch hello from Bill Nichols. Probably not anybody there now who'd remember me, but tell 'em hey anyway. I used to manage their store in Landover Mall eons ago. Sadly both mall & store are no more. I has a sad. :( Welcome, & jump right in. Most of us are a little crazy, but mostly harmless, & the buccaneers on the cursed Black Frigate keep them in line.
