Starting to Get Obsessed
Good evening all! I started smoking the occasional cigar with a glass of bourbon a couple of years ago. But I really have not gotten heavy into the cigar world. I smoke maybe 4 to 5 cigars a year. I enjoy it while I am doing it, but not enough to go out of my way. I was in my local tobacco shop a while back and smelled the familiar sweeter smoke of pipe tobacco, as two gentlemen were smoking pipes nearby. I remember thinking how much more I enjoyed the smell of pipe tobacco than cigar smoke (and definitely cigarette smoke). So, after thinking about it for a couple of weeks, I have decided to give it a go.

I have purchased a cheap pipe on Amazon (like a $20 starter pipe), and I got a "Golden Cavendish Blend" from a neighborhood cigar and tobacco shop. My hope is that this will be more pleasurable than cigars for me. Enough to smoke more often.

I grew up with two parents that were chain cigarette smokers, and thankfully have never taken up that habit, but now in my late 40s, I am ready to try something new.

I look forward to reading more on the forums, and asking some questions. Please be patient with me, sometimes I can be a little dense!

Welcome to the forum, from a fellow SoCal member (born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, living in Frazier Park since 2016). Where's this neighborhood cigar & tobacco shop? As far as I know, Tobacco Trader is basically the only B&M left in the LA area.

Enjoy the forum, and enjoy the journey!

Welcome from the Center Of The Known Universe!

Burbank.

LA is something of a pipe tobacco desert, the Tobacco Trader being one of the last, if not THE last B^M carrying a selection of pipe tobaccos. If you find that you like this past time and want to try othere blends, remember that the Internet is your friend.
Just be patient as you go about learning to smoke a pipe. It isn't rocket science, but there are best parctices that can help you enjoy your new interest.
Feel free to ask questions.

Thank you for the welcome!

Well, it is actually Long Beach, but I didn't really want to explain Long Beach. Easier to say LA, even if it isn't 100% accurate. The shop is Long Beach Cigar & Tobacco, at Spring and Los Coyotes. To be fair, it is a cigar shop with a VERY small selection of tobacco. Basically, a lot of cigars and three fresh pipe tobacco blends, and three packaged blends. I decided to go fresh, but not for any real reason other than it smelled good, and the guy behind the counter said it would be good for a beginner. I spent $24 on 3 ounces, which I know is a lot, but it was the only way he would sell it. Below is a picture of the label.

I plan to give it a shot tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you for the welcome! Yes, I am planning to use the internet a lot. But I kind of got caught up in paralysis of analysis. With so many options, I just didn't know what to do, so I just picked something at random.

The pipe I bought came with wire screens and plastic filters. But from what I have read, those aren't really necessary and may mute the experience. Thoughts?

Dump the screens and maybe the filters. Buy some pipe cleaners.

Welcome . Dump the screens. The filters you can try see it you like them. The ones which come with the kits aren't the best try a name branded set of filters to see if you like them. Eg Vauen, Savinelli, White elephant , Peterson , etc, I personally like filters but only the meerschaum white elephant ones as they reduce moisture but not the flavour profile like activated charcoal might do for some. But your millage may vary so give it a try. A small pack of 20 decent quality filters only costs a couple of bucks

Welcome! I'm also in the greater LA area, Pasadena. Definitely hit up Tobacco Trader in Culver City.

A note about pipes from Amazon. Some pipes are made of woods that are not necessarily safe to smoke out of. I recommend you buy a cheap Missouri Meerschaum cob and use that instead.

Well, that is certainly something I had not considered. According to the description, the pipe is "ebony wood". I never considered it would not be safe. Can you expand on that? Is it a safety concern due to heat, or chemicals burning off from the wood?

Here's a good site that lists different wood toxicity. Keep in mind, some of these woods only result in reactions to people with specific allergies. Wood Allergies and Toxicity | The Wood Database - https://www.wood-database.com/wood-articles/wood-allergies-and-toxicity/

As far as I am concerned, I'd stick with Briar or cherry for wood pipes; clay, block meerschaum, and corn cob for anything else.

That certainly is interesting! I will have to give this a close read. I am an environmental scientist. I spend my time cleaning up toxic spills, so I know a thing or two about exposure. I will have to look deeper into this!
