Hey there adyingbreath.
Welcome to the forums! I think you'll need to be a little more specific with regards to your question, as the volume of info on our shared hobby is monumental. I'd encourage you to wander through the http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/forum/pipe-smoking-basics-amp-beginner-questions forum here to do some basic research and exploration.
If I were going to distill some basic tips for newbies they'd be:
1) Get yourself a handful of pipes, of whatever price and type you'd like (cobs are a good cheap way to build a rotation of pipes) to aid in trying different tobacco types.
2) Buy some tobacco sampler kits from a B&M or online e-tailer to explore different varieties of 'baccy, and to narrow down what you like.
3) Don't get frustrated trying to keep your pipe lit. Go to youtube, or your forum of choice, and research pipe packing tips.
4) Remember to sip, not puff, your pipe while smoking. Slow down your cadence. If your pipe is hot enough that you can't hold the bowl to your cheek, you're smoking too hot.
5) Relax, this is supposed to be fun.
Good luck, and welcome to the hobby.
