Great article. The section on the farming really hit home. I live smack dab in the middle of tobacco country here in Johnston County NC. I live 15 minutes away from what used to be the largest auction warehouse in the world. I remember watching the auction on TV. Tobacco was king and I've spent summers cropping my fair share and I was only 13. The fields that remain around my house grow tobacco every other year and on occasion I stand out in the field (with the farmers permission) and smoke my pipe.

I began smoking a pipe when I was 16, until my parents made me stop. My first job was working at a hardware store where Mr. Jones, the owner, smoked Diebel White Burley in GBD pipes. What a wonderful aroma. Not only did he introduce me to finer pipes, but to tobacco that surpassed anything the grocery store sold. When I went to college you could smoke openly and meet other pipe puffers. I became close friends with faculty as we shared tobaccos and stories about pipes and pipe shops. Today, so much has been driven underground in a Puritan rage to wipe out individual freedom. I lament what has been lost, but celebrate the Web where practices of the art of pipes can continue. I am also thankful for my memories of a freer, happy pipe smoking time.

Just beautiful.

In a way, I am glad I don't have those memories of tobacco in its heyday so to speak. I think it would give me sad things to ponder whilst smoking my pipes.

Still, it must have been grand to witness an era when this fine weed was not the Evil Stepsister of unhealthy lifestyles.

And so it is.....
If I may, glory in your smokes and try to forget about those strange-o meddling antis. It has been well-established that tobacco is not a rejuvenant, but then again driving is the most dangerous thing we do every day. Should we all stop driving?

I think that the volitional aspect of addiction, whereby it is our elbow that brings the glass to our lips and our hand that holds the pipe, is especially troubling to antis. Admittedly we are courting health problems by our own actions. But do you mean to tell me that antis are pure beings who never act against their own self-interest? Seems to me that the human animal is especially adept in shooting himself in the foot. Why not shoot yourself your way and allow me to choose to shoot myself my way?

About a week ago sablebrush posted about denying health coverage to smokers unless they could pay the out-of-pocket cost for smoking related care. Logical? Yes. Civilized? No. Tobacco has been part of civilization for millennia.

What's next? Deny death and dismemberment payments to the families of hang gliders? You don't have to go very far in punishing volitional activity that comes at cost before that rationale becomes absurd.

And don't forget that driving is dangerous and volitional, and that by applying such logic we could cut down on traffic and punish especially volitional drivers, the definition for which we the empowered will supply.

In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
funny thought the very things that has made pipe smoking not in vogue are also the very things that could bring it back in. First it's not a very instant gratification it takes time and practice to really enjoy and that runs counter to so much of our lives and the way they are run. This is why it's a perfect remedy for the pace of modern life. The tobacco not being healthy. Well pipes can be healthy. Instead of eating crap one could enjoy a delicious aromatic. Pipes are great for walking. It never feels like exercise when I smoke my pipe and remember that to harm ones health with a pipe requires smoking at a near constant pace. My point a new year resolution would be to become better at campaign for the resurgence of pipes and pipe smoking. Not just enjoying it but being ready to help other join the fold. To help people see pipes as something dramatically separate from cigarettes.

Ha, resolution #1 is pretty damned close to what I've been thinking. Now that my cellar is tobaccopocalypse-proof for my needs, if not fully complete, I'm going to dedicate more of my pipe smoking budget to a higher end pipe or two. Top of the list is Castello along with Mark Tinsky.

Excellent article. My resolution is to appreciate my cellar. Most of which I could never replace, and one day may offer up to fellow pipers. I seriously doubt I could get through all of it. I recall as a youngster in the 60's, following my father around to the abundant smoke shops in the Detroit, metro area. Was so interesting to watch him rub out tobacco on a newspaper, to blend tobacco in a bowl and jar it. Those shops are nearly gone now, a shame. Keep the fire lit on excellent forums as this!
