I'm 21 and have been interested in pipe smoking since I was 12. I have a couple cobs and a vest pocket pipe. I ordered some aromatics (Mac Barons 7 seas original and Stanwells Vanilla). They haven't arrived yet but I'm pretty excited to start this hobby. Any advice on what I should expect and if any of you have tried the flavors I have ordered? It would be much appreciated thanks.

Welcome from the Central Coast of California! I can't say what to expect with aromatic tobaccos as I haven't tried any in a very long time.

But, welcome, and enjoy!

You can put your location in your Profile, which will save questions in the future as to where you live should you mention local stores, weather, tobacco prices, availability, regulations, location of photos of surroundings, and so forth. Under your avatar, (top right, left most of three symbols) you choose "Account Details, which brings up "My Account". "My Location" is halfway down.

I have no suggestions on the tobacco's, as I've never had either.

However, 21 is a great age to start smoking a pipe. A lot of people will tell you that your too young, etc. Don't listen to them. Back when pipes were truly popular, that's the age many if not most guys started smoking a pipe. It's just that they kept smoking them ,60 years later. That's why people think pipes are for old guys. Hahaha

Welcome from NE FL. I think that sampler is a fine way to start. MB is quality tobacco and those are popular aromatics. Some smokers complain of MacBite. I have not found this personally, but it would be wise to be judiciously slow in your smoking cadence. This is good advice for any new pipe smoker anyway.

Thanks for the reply. I think pipe smoking just has such an elegant style to it. I just know I'm gonna need to take things slow. Just worried it's gomma just taste like smoke. I mean obviously it's gomma taste like smoke but I want to be able to taste all the flavors amd pick them out. I'm sure all that just comes with time.

Started at 17 myself back in '91. You may get a mouthful of flavorless hot air when starting out with aromatics. Don't get discouraged as aromatics are very flavorful once proper packing, lighting, and smoking cadence are learned. I would suggest starting with burley or English blends to train your tastebuds how to perceive the flavor of smoke. Welcome aboard from Central Kentucky!

Of course. I'm glad to hear I picked some decent tobaccos. Was tempted to bite the bullet and just get the basic drugstore captain black but I'm holding off until my baccies get here.

Hey thanks for the advice friend.
Do you have any recommended burley or English blends?

There are, of course, plenty. For a newbie (and even an old guy like me) I would recommend SWR (Sir Walter Raleigh) an OTC and Match ERR (Edgeworth Ready Rubbed) as good initial Burleys. There are literally hundreds of quite good beginner English blends and you would be likely to get different recommendations from everyone. I think starting out with a “true English” (I’m pretty anal on this topic) PS #52 (Peter Stokkebye Proper English) or Presbyterian Mixture (a mild English) would be good staring points. There are so many variants from this point but, this is my beginners recommendation.

I would, politely, disagree with Embers (you see my point about opinions :)). He is a big advocate of Balkan Supreme. It is good (I don’t concur with him that it is the best Balkan) but, I don’t believe that a Balkan should be a new smoker’s entry into the genre. Pegasus is a fine recommendation for a little more upscale version of my Burley recs.

I have tryed the stanwell vanilla it wasn't for me but plenty of people enjoy it. Seemed to have an fruit or apricot topping that was a touch sour tasting to me. Areomatics are a fine place to start pipe smoking. people around you are generally more accepting of them than if you started with heavy english blend. Wifes and girlfriend might stay onboard with the hobby and thats a plus in my book.
