I picked up this little pipe off of eBay for $33 (including shipping) and wanted to know if I got a good deal or did I over pay. I fully admit that I am new to world of pipe collecting so it wouldn't surprise me if I overpaid.

Here it is:

The imprint reads: Royal Danish, Made in Denmark 992
So how did I do?

I am thinking of gifting to this to friend for Christmas. The style is right up his alley and he is the one that got me into pipes. Would it be wrong of me to take it for trial run to makes sure it is a quality smoke before I gift it?

I think that's a great deal - Stanwell's are superb pipes.
I am not so sure I would smoke it though. Personally I wouldn't gift a pipe that smells used. Still, nice gift either way!

I would smoke it and make sure it does not gurgle and smoke hot. Then if you are satisfied, clean it up with grain alcohol and gift it. I wouldn't want to gift a bad smoker, no reason to take a chance in my opinion.

By the way, nice looking pipe and 33 sounds like a good deal, although I am not familiar with stanwell pricing. Hell if you can find a good smoker for 33 bucks then that is always a good deal in my mind.

I picked up an old Reg. No. Stanwell a couple of years ago for around $30-$35. It was in the same condition that yours appears to be in. Unless we both got the shaft, I think you did good.

That's a good price for a nice Stan.

I like Stans, and although folks here seem to be into Savs and Petes, I know some very savvy smokers who think a Stanwell is the best bang for your buck in that price range. :puffy:

Royal Danish is actually a Stanwell second. IMO that really doesn't matter if it smokes well, the price is right, and your happy with it. I have owned three Hardcastle pipes which are Dunhill seconds and they were all great smokers. I would still have them today if they had larger bowls. That pipe you have is a real beauty. I love the shape and the rustication on it. I would say it was worth $33 delivered. Enjoy!

That's a version of the Stanwell 92 ("squashed tomato" some folks call it), designed by Sixten Ivarsson. Very cool shape. I'd say you got a good pipe for 33 bucks. Congratulations.
