Home visiting family for the holidays, and bought this old pipe at a thrift shop today.

A bit of good luck for me, as I've been to this particular store dozens of times over the years (not a chain, just a local operation) and never seen a single pipe before today. They had some (probably deceased) guy's whole collection, but the stems were all ruined on every one except this one and another that they wanted way too much for.

By ruined, I mean that the old fellow looked to have been in the long-term habit of physically gnawing on the end of his pipe stems until they broke. Several others were more intact and had actually interesting shapes, but he'd burned out the rims and scratched off half the finish on them. He absolutely TORTURED his pipes. 😅

Needless to say, I rescued this one at the price of $10 (probably about what the thing is worth, I'd guess).

The stem's oxidation isn't too bad, and I personally find it a handsome shape, besides actually feeling lovely in the hand and comfortable in the mouth (I love a good saddle bit stem).

It's a Fader's Natural, which according to Pipedia was a store brand from a chain called Fader's Tobacco Stores and that it was made in Italy and probably dates from the 1960s. Anyone else have a pipe like it on here?

My beloved Grabow Golden Duke is included in the first picture for size reference.

Probably gonna clean it up a little and put it through its paces after dinner with some Lane HGL before bed.

Hopefully it cleans up well, and is a good smoker for you.
I used to have a Bulldog meerschaum from Fader's several years ago. It was a nice pipe, but I didn't smoke it much so I sold it on ebay. It was made by CAO and was a good quality meer, and I should have kept it. Oh well.
If I recall correctly, Fader's is from the Baltimore area, and are now closed except for one shop. That one may be closed now at this point too, so you have a bit of history right there.

I did notice that they're from Baltimore on Pipedia, which is interesting because I bought the pipe in far northern Indiana, almost to the Michigan border. Must've gotten around quite a ways. I did look and their last store did ultimately go under in 2018.

That looks like a great bargain for only ten bucks. I love that shape and I hope that it smokes well for you. Great find.
Happy to report (having just finished a bowl) that it's actually an excellent smoker. The oxidation (which I don't mind all that much anyhow) is stubborn and I'll deal with later. However, there was no fortunately ghosting because it hadn't been smoked in a very long time, which was nice.

But it smokes incredibly well, the stem is perfect for how I smoke (very much a clencher), and it actually produced some of the biggest smoke clouds I've produced in awhile, which was fun. I think it's the beginning of a beautiful friendship...🥳

Nice find. I look whenever near antique stores of any kind. I love the history of old items. Rarely do I see pipes. One time I got very very lucky. Enjoy your your new bit of the past.

So as I live in far northern Indiana, may I ask what shop you found this at? I know folks don’t like to reveal their honey pots, but I’ve never seen any pipes while scrounging around antique or thrift shops, and I’d like to!
Hart City In Elkhart, which I normally never have much luck at. It's kinda a mixed bag of a store (lots of overpriced and new stuff mixed in with the old because they have venders), but occasionally there's good things. Like I said, this was actually the only time I've ever seen pipes there but it had been awhile.

I also went to Emma's Treasures (also in Elkhart) earlier in the day which is more of a typical junk shop (in a good way) and they actually had a few pipes as well. I got one other pipe there too, but tragically it got broken beyond reasonable repair trying to clean it (stuck tenon cracked open the shank, but it looks like it was already badly cracked inside for a long time) and it wasn't as nice as the other anyway. And it was just a little no-name Italian import briar from probably the 70s that I paid a few dollars for, so it was sad but not a crushing blow. 😭
