In my opinion, the Internet and other societal factors have made people overly precious about pipe smoking methods and techniques.
The following is my take on breaking in a pipe.

1) Select the tobacco you want to smoke then make sure it’s the proper moisture level for smoking. This usually requires some dry time. How much dry time is up to you.

2) Insert the tobacco into the tobacco burning chamber. How exactly insertion is achieved is up to you.

3) Ignite tobacco once it’s in the tobacco burning chamber. How to do that is up to you.

4) Gently puff the mouthpiece of the pipe. How gently and how frequently is up to you.

5) When finished, knock out remnants from tobacco burning chamber then run pipe cleaners through the stem and stummel.

6) Repeat as necessary.

Best of luck!
Let us know how it goes.

Beautiful pipe. I was gifted a sandblast Bing's Favorite and love smoking it.

As far as breaking in a new pipe, I think people put too much thought into it.
I agree with those who say that cake is overrated. I don't place much importance on it at all.

The only thing I do with a new pipe is make sure the first few bowls are smoked all the way to the bottom.

Yes...smoke it. Just for good measure I try to keep it slow the first few bowls but its best to do that all the time. Ive yet to have a problem with a pipe. Treat them well and they will almost always do the same for you. Just like any other pipe...if it starts to feel hot put it down for a few minutes and take it up again.

The Bings Favorites are too long for my liking. But if that one was my only option, I'd smoke that happily. Good looking pipe.

You wI’ll get a lot of advice to just smoke it. Thats actually the common mantra here on this site. However, if you prefer to follow the historical and time tested method used by millions of smokers historically - lightly pack your pipe 1/3 full and smoke it several times that way. Then, do the same but filling it 2/3 full. Afterwards smoke it with a full bowl. There is a tendency amongst people to follow the crowd - while at the same time trying to convince themselves that they are doing just the opposite. Over the course of 40 years and hundreds of new pipes, I have had issues with three new pipes all developing divots in the chambers after 5-10 smokes. Generally, I just load a new pipe and smoke it and 98% of the time that worked. After the 3rd incident (may have been sand pits in the chamber, who knows) I went pack to the 1/3, 2/3, full load smoke method. There have been no further incidents. Now mind you, all three pipes that burned out were subject to being smoked by strong winds during break in. However, had they developed a proper cake for protection, I am left wondering would they have developed burn pits in the chamber to begin with? You decide.

Yes, it is a different geometry than my Savinelli 128 billiard. It will be interesting to see how it impacts the experience. Might be a few weeks before I get the opportunity as I am travelling but all good things come to those who wait I suppose.
