Sorry to bore you guys with new rules, but this is sometimes necessary as a site grows.
Basically, here's the deal.
We are no longer allowing commercial posts of any kind except for paid advertisers. The Buy / Sell / Trade area is for hobbyist members of the site only. You can still post buy / sell / trade stuff, but only if you are a non-industry person and you participate in the forums.
The above post is not the official rules.
The official rules are here:

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/forum-rules-read-before-posting-please
and here

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/read-the-rules-before-posting-here-please
I'm working on one more new rule that I still have to discuss with Bob and Lawrence (pstlpkr), so watch for that one later this week.

I appreciate the work you guys do to keep this forum on course.

It's not easy and frequently winds up being a pain, as there is no

shortage of opportunists The 2 years I've spent as moderator of the

ATM on SF has taught me a number of lessons. It looks easy but it

isn't and can take it's toll in both making decisions and living with

the consequences. The two most common sources of friction are: those

out to make a buck and those who take themselves too seriously. The

concept is simple... Smoke your Pipes and share what you've learned with

those who will listen. For me, it just doesn't get any better and I

suspect that I'm not alone. Thanks Guys!

Hey Kevin, I'd like to suggest an idea - as a member of this forum and a moderator of a few other forums, one thing I have noticed is a dedicated sub forum for vendors. Do you think it would be part of Pipes Magazine to have a dedicated sub forum? One of the greatest things to spawn from the sub forum is vendors that give deals for group buys - good for the vendor and good for members that want to buy as well. It could potentially lead to savings and profits for everyone :)
Just a thought.

It's not a bad idea, but we will hold off for now. Aside from Ted @ Smokingpipes.com, none of the vendors post at all even though I have suggested to a few that they can. I also expressed the idea of posting specials, and no one really jumped at it.
Some said that even though they have permission to do so, that they still feel like they are spamming.
Maybe in the future though.

One more new rule guys:
User Accounts
Each member is allowed one login account. Registering with multiple accounts is not allowed, this includes every part of our website and if we do find you in violation of this rule, all of your accounts are subject to immediate and uncontested removal.
The complete rules have been updated here:

Kev,

just checking but is it OK to place a link into a post, e.g. someone looking for a particular brand of tobacco that they have been unable to find, but I have?
And I agree, it is not unreasonable to remind people of the site rules every now and again. It runs very well under those provisos.

As a Jr. pipe smoker of two years, when I came across this site I was amazed. I enjoy reading the posts very educational, and appropriately humerous. The moderators do an excellent job and respond to questions very timely. The members also are quite helpful and since I've joined I have learned a lot. I thank you for alowing me to be a member.

Sure thing.
Think of it like this:
If you are posting something with the primary intent of helping another member, answering a question, contributing to the discussion, and you are staying on topic, then what you post should be acceptable.
If, on the other hand, the primary reason for your post is to solicit business for a commercial website that you have some interest in, directly, or indirectly, then it is probably not acceptable.
Capice?

Kevin: cool, I'm glad that the vendor(s) are kind of warming up to the idea. Guess we'll all just have to wait :)

No need to apologize, Kevin. It appears we all understand the logic supporting this decision. I'm just glad we're growing.

Thanks for the clarification Kevin. I'm hesitant to post links to

sources that are not sponsors... Sometimes it's unavoidable, such

as when specific information is being sought or a specific resource

would be helpful to Forum members. The Meerschaum Vendors that have

signed on as Sponsors are good resource, with quality products. Some

desire more choices. If this ever presents a problem, please let me know.

Links can be posted to sites that are not sponsors, as long as it is in the spirit of genuinely helping someone here on the forum and you have no commercial interest in it.
(Sometimes those guys notice they are getting traffic from the site and decide to advertise too.) 8)
