Bakelite is great stuff- the best stuff is old stock from the 50's and costs about triple what the best ebonite costs...and is supposedly a royal pain to work with...but it looks sooo good!

Foggy, that is one beautiful hunk of briar! I love the stem too! Being from Tennessee, it's nice to see some southern-fried pipes in your neck of the woods. I hope it serves you well for many years.

Wow, nice pipe, foggy! I guess, I just bought it's Japanese sister... :)
Can you say, in how far the mouthfeel of an Bakelite stem differs to Ebonite? And: Are those stems slightly thicker?
