I cut a large southern red oak down last summer and it had a nice bole. I sectioned a couple of decent logs and racked them to dry. A few weeks ago, I cut slabs and gave them a fairly decent sanding with the idea of using them for what I did not know.
This one I am going to use as my tobacco drying and flake cutting board. I have also decided to carve a few "eggs" to hold a pipe or 2, auger a match holder, and maybe chisel out a small rectangular box for my knife and other misc. tools. Any thoughts or ideas?

Oh, I included these small screw top tins that I found on Amazon. I cut wax paper liners for the bottom and top and I am going to use them for my field carry for 3-4 bowls worth each until I can get to my storage unit with my Nalgene containers. Amazon has 1-4 ounce sizes for cheap. They are relatively sturdy.

It is unfinished. Raw, sanded wood.
Ash, I have use of a friend's saw mill. It is much easier keeping your fingers when you have the right equipment and a friend motivated to keep you from spilling blood all over his toys.

Ooooh ... looking forward to see how this turns out. :puffy:
Maybe a cork knocker in there somewhere? (Ah, forget it ... I never use the knocker, either.)

Doc, here's a project I did using live oak. It's not as practical as yours as I have to unlace and lace whenever using it, but the leather thong and wood dowel add a bit of style. I use this all the time and the dished out depression makes it easy to scoop up tobacco remnants with your fingers. Construction was done mostly with a router for the dish and Dremel to carve out the knife compartment. It was a fun project and maybe will provide some ideas.

Best Regards Doc,

Eric

Eric, that is a very nice looking board. I seriously doubt mine will be so refined. And mine will in no way be portable.
This slab is 2 1/4 inches thick, 12 1/2 inches at longest point and 3.4 pounds. It will be more of a table or end table board. I have some smaller and thinner slices. Maybe a different project. 30 or so this size. Good for the smoker if nothing else. :)

Charles, that is some gorgeous wood you have and if you just left it as a slab it will be beautiful as is. With the material you have leaves lots of room for idea incorporation and experimentation. Looking forward to seeing what direction(s) you go.

Best Regards,

Eric

That's a nice piece of red oak there. Much potential here; I bet you could sell some if they turn out nice.

Iron', that's a lovely piece of woodworking and ingeniously done. The little sections for folding knives is irresistible. acquadoc, your cross section is something; it glows as if it has a finish already, if you can maintain that quality. Just using it as a board might be sufficient, but you can certainly carry it further.
