I just received the Civic Royale "estate" pipes I won on Ebay. They were less than 15 for both with shipping and I am wondering...are estate pipes because they are relatively inexpensive compared to new, recognized name pipes considered less desirable? I know many do not like the thought of using someone's old pipes no matter how sanitized and compare them to BIN pipes.
Anyway, these small Dublins are apparently NOS, never smoked and are more or less immaculate in need of general cleaning, polishing, and one stem needs some light deoxidizing. They do have tubes and I am debating on leaving them or not. They look like they had stickers on the stems at one time. They came in the original box with the numbers on the end of the box matching the numbers on the pipes. Pretty cool find. Not sure why they did not garner more attention other than the Civic name is rather old, only beginning in the pipe business in the 1920's, before that time only in the tobacco business. Was a founding partner of the Cardogan (sp?} conglomerate I think...way back when. The Royale series was one of their top of the line pipes. No fills that I can find and a nice open draw.

Estate pipes means they are previously owned by someone, smoked or not.
Never heard of the line but the briar is beautiful! I would say you got some great pipes for a STEAL.
That is the way eBay is sometimes--- lucky timing and great deals go through unnoticed with only one bidder, other times people bid like there is no tomorrow paying way too much. All in the stars.

I bought one estate pipe, and personally never doo it again. I understand people have the skills to make them like new again, but that's not me. I prefer to buy brand new, and turn them into estates myself lol.

Civic pipes are good pipes, at least in my experience. They are, however, not nearly as coveted as several other English brands. You got an excellent deal.
As an aside, Civic actually got into the pipe business at least as early as 1913 or 1914.

Thanks BurOak. The info I found reading on RebornPipes and a few other resources could only get me back to the early 1920's. There is not much information out there to be found.

Nice lithe little flake/plug/coin/rope burners. Excellent deal. Estates run the gambit from multi-thousand dollar museum pieces to burnt up trashers. You pick and choose, and you chose well.

Couple of great lookin smokers you got there! I love those exquisitely thin saddle bits.
I personally am a fan of estate pipes.
I decided to get back into pipe smoking in October of last year. I've been a pretty avid cigar smoker since about 1982 and have smoked a pipe 2 or 3 times a year since then.
So, with a couple of humidors full of cigars and one pipe, a late 80's freehand Nording Autograph, I started goin to the estate sales around here and perusing ebay.
Since then I think I'm up to around 30 or so pipes that I've restored / refurbished with another dozen on the bench waiting for their turn. I guess that means that I have EPAD? :)

Sounds like you're back in the saddle again,

out where a friend is a friend,

Where the longhorn cattle feed

On the lowly gypsum weed

Back in the saddle again (apologies to Hopalong Cassidy or whomever-Looked up: it was Gene Autry)
How bout some photos of your journey?

Jensen, that is cool. How did you find that and I wonder if this is the only time they made the Royale series? I cannot find much of anything on line.
