Don't know if this is just me. It probably is since i just got a really cheap 20$ pipe for my first pipe. It has a metal filter and if i just suck on it without tobacco, it tastes like cigarettes.
I'm assuming it must have been assembled in close proximity to other tobacco products, but the taste of it is REALLY over powering. I can barely taste the tobacco i put in it.
Cleaning it with warm water and salt helped a bit but it still tastes really bad
Is this just me?
Thanks in advance

It's probably an estate (aka used) pipe. New pipes never taste like tobacco.
You cleaned the pipe with WATER? I'm not sure I would have done that. Usually one uses alcohol to de-stink a pipe. Water and wood hardly ever mix well.
What's the state of the pipe now? How did you dry out the water? Without knowing the details it may be a lost cause. But when you spend $20 on a pipe, you get what you pay for.
I hope it turns out ok.

Well it's a metal and plastic pipe, lol.
It's soaking in warm water as i speak. I dried it outlast time by spending a few minutes blowing into the bottom half.
I'l definitively look for some alcohol, though. Thanks for the advice

Metal and plastic?! It's not a pipe meant for tobacco and therefore probably not appropriate for this forum.
But I'm not a moderator, so I'll leave it up to them.

Time for a decent pipe for you...how much can you afford? Maybe someone on here can hook you up with a good known smoker that will start you out right.

Cheers

My first pipe was one of those Chinese things. You can get them for as little as $5 with free shipping from China (site called dealextreme), I was ordering some things and had been wanting to try pipe smoking for a while so I got one. I had a horrible time trying to start smoking with one and it wasn't until I smoked a "real" pipe than I learnt the difference and what pipe smoking should really be.
Both MM corn cobs (available for $10 in the US unless I'm mistaken, again avoid the Chinese cobs available for just a few dollars - I've tried one and they're quite awful) and any cheap briar wood pipe (can get "basket pipes" (no brand) new for about $30 or so in the US I think) will get you a much better experience.
Hope this doesn't put you off too much and that you'll keep at it :)

Throw them away, they are in a word "crap". Buy yourself a couple Missouri Meecham Cob pipes for about $7.50 each. You'll never be sorry or get more value than that purchase. Check the side bar and order some from one of our site sponsors. And welcome aboard if you decide to stay, there is a lot of information here and many willing to guide you.

Sorry to hear that you got ripped off with that poor quality pipe. I hope you can get a refund at the shop you bought it from. Not sure about the Law where you live, but here in the UK you would have a right to return the pipe as it is not "fit for the purpose for which it was bought". You might want to check your consumer rights on a local website.
As others have said - Missouri Meerschaum are excellent value and smoke well for under $10. It will serve you well for a long time if you are careful with it and even if you decide to get a Briar Wood pipe later, they benefit from resting after smoking them all day. So you can smoke your cob one day and the Briar the next. I hope you can get something sorted out and this hasn't put you off pipe smoking.

I'd definitely stick with the Dr Gralbow!!
I bought 2 packs of Borkum Riff tobacco (one of the few brands available in Australia) - the 2nd because I couldn't believe the 1st was so bad - they were as bad as each other, dried horse shite. The manufacturer, to whom I wrote a letter of complaint, bent over backwards to please me, replacing the tobacco and giving me a free pipe.
Unfortunately that won't happen in your case because of who and where the manufacturer is and their standards of excellence (that was a joke).
However, if you can establish from the Tobacconist from whom you bought it who the Distributor of the brand is into your country, write them an email outlining your concerns (and mentioning politely you'll be putting up a thread on every pipe smoking forum available if it is not rectified) they should come to the party and give you a store credit or replacement of another brand they distribute - vary rarely does a distributor only handle one product and brand.
Good luck, and don't let this one get past you, the more who back these idiot manufacturers into the corner the less people get stung because they have to lift their games.

Dr Graybow is available at most drug stores in my area. I like mine. MM is the choice for a corn cob.

Personally, I would buy two MMs for the price you would spend on 1 Dr. Grabow. Then save a few bucks and get a decent estate pipe from some place like smokingpipes.com, one of this site's sponsors. Buy the best pipe you can afford. :puffy:
