? to all

jim51 here. Currently living in bradenton Florida. I started smoking a pipe three months ago. I really like it. Been smoking cigars for years but I’m giving them up in favor of the pipe.
So far my favorite tobacco is captain black royal. I’ve got a few pipes.
I need some advice. Shortly after I started smoking a pipe I noticed a raised area on the top of my tongue near the front. I’ve heard about Tongue bite and I’m making sure I get good tobacco. The tongue bite isn’t really a problem but I still have this raised area on the top of my tongue. Anyone else ever have this problem?

Have a dentist or doctor look at your tongue, unless it goes away before you see one. I prefer pipes to cigars. There is a significant savings. One premium tin of pipe tobacco will give you twenty smokes, more or less, for the same price as one premium cigar, or less. Welcome aboard from central North Carolina.

I wouldn't smoke until you see the Doctor. It's probably nothing, but why chance it. You might want to get a tobacco you can dry. Captain Black has a tendency to not dry too well. It also has a lot of PC (Propylene Glycol) which helps to keep it moist. The PC can irritate some people's mouths.

Thanks for your reply.
Hmmmm PC?
Can you tell me the names of some good tobacco that doesn’t have PC or any other damaging chemicals?

Damaging chemicals are part of tobacco -- tars and the benzopyrene you get when you burn anything. The defense is to smoke moderately, though peoples' susceptibility varies widely. Preservatives and especially flavoring are unknowns when you burn them. No one has studied this, so it is an unknown. Keep your risks within your comfort zone.

Nobody wants to be responsible for bad advice. Best to err on the side of caution.

What you're probably asking is whether this is a normal phenomenon that we're all familiar with. No, it's not. So find out what's up before proceeding.

As a point of interest, @mso489 makes a great point about our ignorance of the effects of burning other substances in our tobacco. No studies have isolated the various possible additives to study distinctly. Some smokers have discovered by trial and error that they have a sensitivity to certain substances or certain varieties of tobacco.

In any case, welcome from NE Wisconsin!

Welcome from Scotland. Hope the tongue is nothing serious. I had a lovely holiday on the outskirts of Bradenton in 2010. Family were staying at friends who own a lovely home and pool just east of Bradenton beyond the I75 near the Manatee River.
