Alright guys, my Rosslare Royal Irish 6 arrived after ordering from Pipe Divan. A quick shout out to them, because the pipe arrived at my door exactly one week after placing the order, and Yiorgos from Pipe Divan was a pleasure to do business with. (Also, I got it for $127 with free shipping!!) If you've drooled over these online, you know that's a stupid good deal. I'll post some pictures of the new pipe, and then share some initial thoughts about it...

So the quality of the pipe appears to be nearly flawless. This is only my second Peterson so I don't have a whole lot to compare it to. The briar actually looks much deeper and more stunning in person. I know, I know... everyone says that... but it's completely true for this beauty. There are zero fills, also a big plus for me. The silver work looks fantastic to my eye, and I don't see any real flaws whatsoever as far as cosmetics are concerned. I have only smoked one little half bowl out of it, so it's not broken in by any means, but I do have a few minor concerns with the pipe.
1) Before ever smoking it, and it had been sitting at room temp for 3 days, the fit between mortise and tenon is EXCRUCIATINGLY tight. Like, I'm afraid I'm going to snap the stem every time I remove or try to reset it in place.
2) The air hole appears to my eye to sit slightly up towards the 12 o' clock position in the shank, not perfectly centered. Also it is slightly oblong or elliptical looking, not perfectly round.
3) There is a gurgle which is not present in my other Pete. Granted, I only smoked some C&D Dreams of Kadath that has never been out of a sealed jar since the tin was opened. The leaves were definitely pretty moist and I only let it dry for about 10 minutes after breaking up some of the plug. So maybe the tobacco was just too moist?
Anyway, I do truly love this thing, and I hope it will break in nicely. It's stunning, and seems to be a quality pipe. Wondering if anyone else has experienced any of my aforementioned difficulties? Especially a super duper tight fitting stem and gurgle? I really hope these quirks will work themselves out of the pipe with time.

I have the Rosslare Royal Irish in the 106. It's like the big brother to the 6. They certainly are lovely pipes. I've not encountered the issues you're having with any of my Petes. I hope yours breaks in over time to. You say the tobacco was moist so perhaps a bit of drying time, or try another blend. Enjoy the heck out of it

Thanks! It is truly gorgeous to behold, I could not be happier with the aesthetics of this pipe. After browsing the forum I see that I can gently sand the tenon with super fine sandpaper until the stem fits properly, so I’ll definitely be doing that tomorrow. That’ll be one issue solved! I completely cleaned the entire pipe with alcohol after my first smoke tonight, I’m going to try some Plum Pudding that is at ideal moisture content tomorrow and see if the gurgle goes away.

Love that pipe! That's got to be one of my favorite Peterson styles. Just checks every box and I hope you enjoy it.

I only very occasionally had gurgle. When I did I swabbed it out with a cleaner and overcame it. It happened so occasionally there was never a pattern to analyze to understand why. It happened with pipes that were free of it in as many as 100 other smokes.

Don't worry too much about the drilling in the shank, some of my Petersons have it too and they smoke like a dream. The same goes for the not perfectly round hole.

I would not sand down the tenon but rather trace it with a carbon pencil, it will act as a lubricant. The wood can expand and contract during the seasons, so meaning a tight fit now does not mean it will be that way in a few months. I just do not remove any stems from pipes with a tight fit unless I do a deep clean every so many months.
Enjoy your new Peterson! It will bring you lots of joy. At that price, it is a real steal as the cross grain on it looks fantastic!

Well, I’m happy to update that I lightly sanded the tenon with some 1500 grit and now I can get it on and off without destroying my hands, and it is free enough to rotate so I can adjust the mouthpiece properly. Also, I smoked a bowl of C&D Mad Fiddler that is also stored quite moist, but I let it dry for about 40 minutes. I got a very slight gurgle at the bottom of the bowl, but much better than my first attempt. This pipe smokes pretty darn well, and burns the whole bowl with little to no unburnt tobacco left at the bottom. Bowl never got hot which is fantastic. I’m confident this will break in and be a great pipe with a little TLC.

A tip for a tight tenon fit, just rub it (the tenon) on a dry bar of Ivory soap, it works, and does not effect the taste of the tobacco smoked. Nice looking Pete!

Love the execution of the shape, the metalwork, and the stain and stem color on that pipe. I don't have one quite that handsome, but I have quite a few Petes, all mysteriously trouble-free, "knock on wood," as my mom used to say.

I like hearing about trouble free Pete’s! I confess myself mildly disappointed that this is a higher grade specimen and I’ve had immediate issues with it. Luckily I got the tenon squared away with no trouble, and it’s impossible to tell it was even sanded. The gurgle doesn’t thrill me but I’ll just have to take extra care to properly dry my tobacco when smoking this one. The pipe is SO beautiful I can’t stay mad for long. I’m a new pipe smoker so I have lots and lots to learn in the tobacco prep and pack department. Maybe my System Standard 313 gave me a false sense of confidence because it never gurgles or hiccups in any way.

That is one classy pipe!

I am with baz on rubbing the tenon with a carbon pencil. I've done that many, many times to get a recalcitrant stem to fit properly.

Some of my Petes are a little off plumb, too, but that has not to date interfered with the smokability.
Happy smoking
