Their "second hand smoke magically seeping through" argument reminds me of one of our neighbours who is, to say the least, a bit hypochondriac. Now, we have an ordinance here in Anchorage prohibiting smoking within 20 ft / 6 m from public entryways. I comply. Since we live on the bottom floor by one of the doors, I don't like people smoking next to and under my window either, but, live and let live. Said lady who lives on the other side of the building makes the same argument as the author of the article.
As for clean air in San Rafael, well .....

I love how they say 2nd hand smoke is more dangerous in very small quantities than inhaling it on a regular basis. Wacky science we now use right? On top of that they just assume all smokers inhale.

Smoking bans cut heart attacks?!? GIVE ME A BREAK! Heart attacks are decades in the making. To suggest that a smoking ban, over a one or two year period, can prevent heart attacks is ridiculously irresponsible if you consider all of the factors at play. It's hard to take medical studies seriously these days...

Wow, a 36% drop in all heart attacks from public smoking bans (due to 2nd hand smoking reduction? Does anyone actually believe this? What a menace to society we are!

I don't want cigarette smokers around the apartment smoking but to outlaw it seems a little to intense. I would rather just ask someone to not smoke in the apartment or at my front door then have another crazy law.

These so-called studies and research are so obviously skewed, yet the general population, conditioned not to question them, never blinks. We were at the doctors the other day with my daughter for her 9 month checkup, and on the wall there was a flyer about car seat safety that indicated that 1 out of 3 babies who die in car wrecks were not in a child seat. That is a sad statistic, however, last time I checked my logic, if 1 out of 3 were NOT in a car seat, then the other 2 WERE

Quote from the linked article:
"The studies appear in two leading journals - Circulation and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology."
IMO, particularly in light of modern technology, the magnitude of the implications of the politicization of science is almost too vast and horrific to contemplate.

Well I think we humans as a race should just sit around and wait for death... since you know these days even breathing costs cancer. If I accidentally eat too much I might get colon cancer or stomach cancer, drink a little too much, oops liver cancer... God forbid I smoke in the open near doors... Hmm it seems that they say that secondhand smoke is more dangerous than first hand... I put in the motion to get the whole world smoking! That way secondhand smoke that kills easier than first hand smoke won't exist!
Sheesh... I respect that they don't smoke, and I won't go smoke beside them or blow smoke in their faces but please... if you want to talk about respect for others it should be mutual! So respect my right to smoke and I'll respect your right to shove a stick... rather I'll respect your right to not smoke... Like if you see me smoking and you don't want to inhale my second hand smoke by all means there's quite a lot of space in the world, you can choose to walk 3-5 meters outside of where I am standing and smoking!

I live in the bay area. They e actually had a law life this in effect for about a year I believe in Alameda and in Downtown Concord it is illegal to smoke anywhere. Absurdity at it's finest. I can't wait to move back to Arizona and have my guns the way I want them and carry a handgun if I damn well please without obtaining any special permits not on the same subject but we are talking freedoms so I figure I'd throw it in.

You can't smoke anywhere in downtown Hayward. I actually live in the county, but am still waiting for someone to call the cops on me one of these days, since I tend to stand out in front of my place smoking my pipe and drinking a beer while watching my kids ride their bikes. You know, generally contributing to the downfall of our society!
EDIT: Nothing like a fine craft beer or homebrew and a pipe full of quality tobacco to prove to the world that I am a complete maniac bent on destruction. Hide your children and women folk, here I come!!!!

Reminds me of another report I read where the "researchers" (and I use that term loosely) claimed in their "study" that a town in Montana had something like an (absurd) 60% reduction in heart attacks during a period of 6 months. The 6 month period was following a public smoking ban, but after 6 months they overturned the ban.
