New Here and Could Use Some Help

So im still pretty new to pipes and recenty got an estate pipe that needs a restore, not a major problem. I scored a dunhill shellbriar from about 1961. I noticed a brass insert in the draft hole and now im not sure how i would ream this pipe. Anyone help with this or give me some history on this it would be great. Thanks.

Welcome from Virginia. Some of the Dunhill’s came with an inner-tube but I’m not sure it was brass. Try removing the stem and removing the brass piece if possible. I’m sure someone else will be of more help.

I've never seen such a thing on a pipe. I would try to push it out of the way, but I'm no expert.

Howdy, Amarkey.
Well you've come to the right place for pipe smoking and pipe restoration.
Saying that, I'm no expert on restoration, but re. your Dunhill, the brass insert you're referring to is in fact an Aluminum tube, which was inserted to protect the pipe. It looks as though it may have been inserted the wrong way around, but it can be removed by taking the stem out of the shank.

I guess it looks like brass because it has been stained by tar from the tobacco. the reverse end should have an angled end to it.
Take care removing the stem from the shank. Gently twist it in one direction and gently pulling at the same time.
Let's have a look at the stampings on your Dunhill too, if you can take some pictures.

That’s definitely a Dunhill Inner tube.

It should come with the stem. If it doesn’t it’ll come right out.

Yeah it definitely did not come out with the stem. Im gonna clean it up some tomorrow and see if i can see it better. If not there is a pipe shop a few hours from me that also repair pipes.

Betcha it's fused in there with old gunk. I'd try WD-40. [joke, heh] Something alcoholic might loosen it up. When you get it out, throw it away. OR--since that's a Dunhill from the "good" years, and well worth coddling, you could send it to a pro for resurrecting. Briarville, or somebody like that. That's definitely what I'd do.
