Hi all, I'm new to the forum and to pipe smoking. I own four pipes as of right now, an estate briar billiard pipe (Labeled Royal Lane, which I believe makes it a second Comoy's), a couple of Missouri Meerschaum cobs (A Huck Finn, and a Missouri Pride), and the first pipe I ever bought, a bent "Ebony Pipe" from amazon. Now, once I got my other pipes, I set this amazon pipe away. I figured these other pipes were superior. However I got it in my head to play around with the ebony pipe, to alter it. So the first thing I did was to widen the opening at the mouth end of the stem. I felt it was choked, so I widened the opening to 3/32 of an inch. This improved the experience of the pipe, lowering relights, and I must say as far as taste goes, this pipe gives me the cleanest and overall best flavor profile for my tobacco. It's still not my favorite smoker, it tends to run hot, but I think I may be able to further improve upon it. The issue first at hand is that it smokes quite hot. Not 100% a bad thing as it makes me slow my cadence, but I think it's at least partially caused by the finish, it appears to be lacquered instead of waxed and polished. My first goal is to strip it and refinish with carnauba wax. The second task is the main reason I'm asking for advice, the draft hole is a little bit north of the bottom of the bowl, I was wondering if pipe mud may fix this, and if anyone has any input. This pipe is the most attractive in my collection, and I do enjoy smoking it.

Hi, first off welcome to the forum. Regards your Amazon pipe burning hot I would ask is it made of briar or not. A lot of pipes on Amazon are made of fruit wood, often pear wood and these do burn hotter than their briar counterparts. As for the finish on the pipe, in my opinion that has little to no bearing on how hot a pipe burns, it's just a cosmetic thing.
As for the draught hole being a little high, I shouldn't worry about that too much unless it is really too high.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Jay.

I'm with Jay all the way on this one. The finish isn't making the pipe smoke hot. Some pipes just smoke hot because of the wood, and that does include briar. Slowing your cadence is a good thing.. When you're just keeping the tobacco barely lit, just smoldering, you're going to get the most flavor from what you smoke.
If the draft hole is a little higher than the base of the bowl, don't fret. It's not uncommon and it helps keep some of the moisture in the tobacco from running down the airway and into your mouth, which is also a good thing.
Photofuckup is holding its members' pictures for ransom. You pay your $500 yearly and they will spring them for remote server viewing. I've tried the browser add-ons that supposedly circumvent this, but in my case they didn't work and merely slowed my browser to a crawl.
You can post your images here on PM. There is a "how to post image"s section in the stickies posted in the dark orange section of the forum page.
