Tobacco is obviously an agricultural product, and it is subject to changes in climate, weather conditions, type of soil, etc.
So how do tobacco blenders and producers maintain consistency in a blend, year after year? I asked Mr. Pease to write about this, and you might be surprised by his answer. I'm pretty sure it won't be what you expect to hear.

Not only pipe tobacco and wine, but coffee and many other gustatory pleasures--honey, cheese, even preserved meats--are subject to the skill of the blender's hand (as well as 'terroir'). This same issue is very much at the forefront of the specialty coffee industry right now, and Greg's article elucidates a number of points that a lot of research is delving into. It's a wonderful time for such ephemeral experiences as these, and I'm glad to be around for this renaissance of taste.

Thanks for another great article, PM.com  I'm forwarding it to several colleagues as well.
