Hey folks. New to the forum. My initiation to the world of pipe-smoking was with Chief Catoonah (Dick Silverman) in the mid-late 90s. Couldn't have asked for a friendlier mentor. He shipped me my favorite blend for a long time.

Smoked pipes on and off for the last 20+ yrs, mostly off, but am now way on again and very pleased. Pipe-world on the internet is a whole new game.

I'm enjoying the English blends -- mostly 4 Noggins Owl's Head and Stokkebye's English Luxury -- and spending far too much time looking at pipes and tobacco online.

The first pipe I ever really loved, and which I just restored a little, is a P. Holtorp freehand, but a slender one compared to some of his monsters. My dad bought it at Pipe-Dan in 1970 and gave it to me 20 yrs ago. He was a pipe-smoker (all my best pipes were once his), as were both my grandfathers. My 97-year-old grandfather's house just burnt down about a month ago along with all his pipes, so the first thing I did was send him one that had been in the family a long time.

Speaking as a farmer who digs into several forums -- haying, cattle, tractors, etc. -- I have to say this is by far the kindest and most welcoming. Thanks for all your accumulated wisdom.

I smoke PS17 too, but if you like that, you should try Eric Stokkebye's, 4th Gen., 1882 Founder's Blend...it's fantastic! The PS17 is very good...but it's like a Toyota is to Lexus, or Nissan is to Infiniti.
Welcome aboard by the way

Thank you sir! I was just admiring your Nachwalter bent brandy a moment ago.

We're farming a rocky hilltop in Northfield (central VT). Are you around these parts?

I was unsure, checking out the 1882, but now I'll definitely order some. Thanks for the recommendation!

I don't know if they have current batches or not, but one thing I was impressed about with this blend is that the tins I got just a few months ago were tinned back in mid-2016...nicely aged already and you could definitely tell.

Fantastic. I needed to find some current blends to replace the good Dunhills and Fribourgh & Treyers that are disappearing fast.

Do you jar your tinned tobacco after you open it, or leave it in the tin?

I use mason jars...go buy a pack of new ones (quarts) at Walmart. Jarring it isn't necessary except to reseal it after you refill your pouches...at least for me that's the reason I use jars; others use them to age, mine goes too fast to worry about aging once I get it, lol.

Welcome to the forums. Vermont, one of the few states I've never visited...on my bucketlist though.

Welcome to the site. I did a good amount of skiing in Vermont back in the day with Killington being my favorite.
When I open a tin I keep the tobacco in it and put my open tins in a tupperware like container that keeps the tobacco fresh for well over a year.

Thanks -- where in CO? I lived for years on the Western Slope: Durango, Collbran, Carbondale.

Welcome! Shame about your grandpas house. Always sad to lose a place full of memories. Looking forward to getting to know you.
