Hey folks. New to the forum. My initiation to the world of pipe-smoking was with Chief Catoonah (Dick Silverman) in the mid-late 90s. Couldn't have asked for a friendlier mentor. He shipped me my favorite blend for a long time.
Smoked pipes on and off for the last 20+ yrs, mostly off, but am now way on again and very pleased. Pipe-world on the internet is a whole new game.
I'm enjoying the English blends -- mostly 4 Noggins Owl's Head and Stokkebye's English Luxury -- and spending far too much time looking at pipes and tobacco online.
The first pipe I ever really loved, and which I just restored a little, is a P. Holtorp freehand, but a slender one compared to some of his monsters. My dad bought it at Pipe-Dan in 1970 and gave it to me 20 yrs ago. He was a pipe-smoker (all my best pipes were once his), as were both my grandfathers. My 97-year-old grandfather's house just burnt down about a month ago along with all his pipes, so the first thing I did was send him one that had been in the family a long time.
Speaking as a farmer who digs into several forums -- haying, cattle, tractors, etc. -- I have to say this is by far the kindest and most welcoming. Thanks for all your accumulated wisdom.
