Picked up this Dr. Grabow Royal Duke #65 at the pipesandcigars.com storefront in Albany on Saturday. Very nice pipe. Nice briar, good color and finish and most important: Good smoker! Don't discount the good Doctor!

I really think Dr. Grabow pipes are the best massed produced briar pipes. They offer consistent quality and considering their wide distribution, they are probably responsible for the successful start of many a pipe smoking experience.

Slowpuffer I think Peterson, or Savinelli would be more to the tune of the best massed produced pipes... Dr. Grabows can smoke good, but they are a mixed bag IMO.

While I'll second the Savinelli statement, hnryclay, I've heard of and seen too many Petersons with problems to agree on that one.
I love my 2 Grabows and would LOVE to get another Royal Duke (which has very similar coloring and matte finish as yours), since the one I have smokes like a dream, with or without a filter.

@wildcat - I'm a TAD envious (pun intended), I didn't even know P&C had a retail location. That's a nice looking Doc Grabow there.

my first pipe was a Doc Grabow Grand Duke
@ejames - here's a pic of the pipe I've got in my teeth in my avatar picture, it's a Royalton, I bought it off Amazon, oh three months ago or so. It's one of the very few Doc Grabow's I've seen that came with a lucite stem.

@ papipeguy: Keep American jobs in America! (Nothing against my foreign brethren! We just need jobs!)
@ Ed: No thanks, I'm good! 'Sides, you need more Larks don't ya?! I hadn't heard about what jaysin said either...??
@ zanthal: Nice Royalton. I'm waiting on a Royalton #65/Zulu to show up at my doorstep soon! Yes, Pipesandcigars has a store. Very nice, geared mostly towards cigar smokers IMO. Known as Habana locally. Cup O Joes and Park Lane also have stores, all within 10 to 40 minutes of my house! :D
@ lordnoble: I wish everyone could take a good honest look at what is coming out of Sparta today. While the DrG estates are great, we need to remember the new ones too. They are good smokers. Like ANYTHING, there are bound to be clunkers, as in your comments about Petes. Don't throw the baby out with the bath water as they say! Keep this grand old company alive and well and take $30 or $40 once or twice a year and buy a new one! Great way to get someone started and great for your own rotation too! In addition to the drug stores, most of the B&Ms carry them too I believe. OK, enough ranting!

Zanthal,yours is a second generation Royalton,which came out in the 1980's. They have always had lucite stems.Some of the Hillcrests,( no longer made) had lucite stems. They also made some pipes for one of the tobacco companies that had lucite stems IIRC.

Those are some nice looking pipes! I guess I should be ashamed of myself, I've been a pipe smoker for over 30 years, and still don't own a Grabow. :oops:
