New Boswell Pipe Arrived Today

I’m in Ontario Canada and received my new weathered stone bent apple pipe today. It took only two weeks and I wasn’t dinged for any extra duty or taxes by customs. I had requested Northwoods, but for some reason I received a black cherry sample Instead. No big deal, but I thought he included a tobacco of choice. I know I won’t be smoking black cherry. ?

I have a question about the draw hole. I was surprised to see the hole was drilled at an angle that took a bit of briar where the stem is placed into the shank (See Photo). Is this normal, and is there any worry here? Common sense tells it will be a weak spot that may crack. I’m interested in hearing thoughts. A couple other of my pipes have a slight knock out in the same place, but not to this degree.

Ive waited a long time to purchase a Boswell. I’m interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Completely normal. It's common to make the 2 different angles drilled so the approach to the tobacco chamber isn't as significantly steep on bent pipes.

Thank you for your reply. I sent off a note to Boswell also. I didn’t expect to hear back for awhile but received a reply from Rachel Boswell within the hour. I was told that JM does all these by hand and it is indeed common in this type of pipe and should cause issue. Nice customer service.

nope they just didn't like the cut of your jib. Yeah you're probably right.

That's pretty normal for bent pipes. The alternative is often a draft hole really high in the mortise.

it's saying they just are trying to mess with you. The saying is for when you just don't like someone but the reason isn't really there. Like I just don't like that guy. Of course I don't think that's what's happening, just a very poor attempt at being funny.

And here I was thinking that the notch was a groove and that the tenon had a corresponding tongue, kinda like an index so that the fit would be perfect. Ah well.

I know I haven’t spent as much as some of the folks on here at Boswell’s, but I’ve spent my fair share. I have a particular weakness for those pipes as they were the first small-scale pipes I discovered some six-seven years ago when starting out.

I don’t know if they “know” me when I order, or not; but, I’ve requested on several occasions to have a specific tobacco included with a new pipe and have never gotten what I wanted.

Thanks for your insight on this. Not sweating that 1 oz at all. I am kicking myself for not having the foresight to order few ounces of Northwoods with it. It’s been on my list for a Long time.
