Looking at getting a new Parker Jockey Club straight billiard. Does anyone recommend the 001 (large) or 005 (medium).

If it were me, I'd go straight to the 005 as an all-rounder - folded flakes wouldn't really work in the large. But that's me. Depends what you smoke; if ribbon cut only, go for the large. Disclaimer: I don't own a Parker pipe.

It really depends on your preference
I have pipes that range from tiny to large, with most being a group 3-4 bowl, which is my preferred size.

I find that I reach out least for my largest pipes.

This Parker straight grain saddle stemmed billiard is a group 4 bowl.

It is light, and clenching is quite effortless, although I smoke mainly with a pipe in the hand.

Length of smoke depends a lot on the cut of the tobacco.
A shag cut will burn fastest and cube cut or folded flakes the slowest.
Also how loosely or firmly you pack.

The size of the chamber is but just one variable.

This Parker gives me a 30min to 50min smoke depending on the blend, cut and dryness of the tobacco.

Boy, Oz, that is a beauty. Don't know if you've displayed it before, but I believe it's my first view of it.

My only Parker is a birth year lovat shape with a smaller bowl. I really like the size and shape, but I could sure warm up to one like this, as well.

Thank you.

I love Lovats.
I missed out on a birth year Dunhill Lovat sometime back.
Been in the lookout for another, but part of me says “you have more than enough” 😁

Thanks chaps 👍🏻 Really appreciate the help and advice.

There really is not much difference between the two pipes, so I am thinking perhaps it is more aesthetics?

001 Large
  • Overall Length: 149mm
  • Overall Height: 49mm
  • Bowl Height: 49mm
  • Bowl Diameter: 38mm
  • Bore: 20mm
  • Weight: 46g

002 Medium
  • Overall Length: 145mm
  • Overall Height: 45mm
  • Bowl Height: 45mm
  • Bowl Diameter: 35mm
  • Bore: 19mm
  • Weight: 38g
I must say, I also like that Lovat! Nice figure and good proportions.

Do you mind if I ask OzPiper, which of the two pipes I am looking at share the closest dimensions?

My Parker billiard measurements are
Chamber diameter: 19mm
Chamber depth: 40mm

I’d say the Medium 002 is it.

Thanks OzPiper,

So I am guessing the 005 would be a No. 3 bowl and the 001 a No. 1 bowl?

I could never get my head around bowl sizes.

Sorry, I’m not up with the Parker bowl size classifications.

I’m still using the Dunhill groups as a (approximate) guide.
Just be aware that Dunhill used them as a guide to block size, not the finished bowls.

My Parker billiard does not have a size indication.

Would the extra 1mm in bore size really make that much difference?

Also managed to get a photo of the two side by side, for anyone who is interested in the aesthetics.PXL_20250415_083024328.jpg

I like the idea of having a good all-round pipe (I am aware that such a thing arguably does not exist), but at the same time I like the idea of having thicker walls (for longevity) and a chunkier bowl. The extra stem length also could not hurt right? After all, I do not want to frazzle my moustache!

Are you a clencher ?
Or smoke mainly with pipe-in-hand ?

If you clench, then lighter is better.
If the latter, then thicker walled bowls make sense.

The length doesn’t make any difference to the coolness of the smoke.
It comes down to proportion of the shank/stem to bowl height and size.
I love the elegance of a Bing, but I’m notoriously clumsy and can picture several ways to damage that shaped pipe.
After years of indifference, I now really love (the shorter iterations) Lovats.

Choose the one that really calls out to you

Both are nice.

I think the clenching advice is important

Also, do you smoke things that burn faster or slower? Ribon vs Flake or broken flake etc...

How long do you want your smokes to be?

I dont think you can make a bad choice between the two.

The small pipe...is that a flaw in the rim or a photo mistake?

Good question about clenching.
I clench a pipe when smoking on the go (as I often am) but in the hand when over a glass of Scotch.

Generally ribbon over flake, and a probably a 30-45 minute smoke. 30 minutes always feels comfortable.

In regards to which one calls to me, well... they both do!

Also, I neglected to mention, but this will be my first higher end pipe. And I tend not to smoke too often.

Does one of these pipes have dimensions/proportions more in line with a billiard of old?
