I just came across a new in the box 1971 Dunhill Bruyere size 2. What would be the purpose of the small metal rod that is inside the stem and bowl? Wondering if any of the Dunhill experts would know. Thanks in advance.

It's called an inner tube. They were sold in packs and worked like a disposable liner in the days before pipe cleaners. Dunhill seems to randomly include them even in new pipes.

It's the "Inner Tube", the idea behind it is/was the inside of it would get dirty (accumulated tars etc) instead of the pipe. When it was dirty, it was replaced. The pipe, of course, can be smoked without it, giving a slightly more open draw.

It's an innertube, when it gets crud in it to the point it can't be cleaned you can buy a 4 pack of replacements for a little over $10 shipped from Cup o' Joes and other places.
