I've picked up some Peterson pipes recently and I could use some help. Here are 2 stummels with no COM or grading/shape numbers. They both are stamped with Peterson's System Standard. I suspect the smaller pipe is a 309 or 313. I have no idea about the other stummel. I've checked Pipedia and other sources but I'm just not sure. Can anyone enlighten me?
And is it possible to find original replacement stems or is that just a pipe dream? Not sure which period these stummels are from.
Here are some other Peterson's I've picked up, shapes 358, 367, 32?. Are they called bent billiards? Again, appreciate any help you can provide.

I'm not a resto guy, but as much as I can see, the briar looks in fair shape, and the finishes won't require much work beyond cleanup. The stems might clean up pretty well, from some of the transformations I've seen by Forums members. You could learn stem work from fitting the stummel briars with stems. It wouldn't be so expensive to have them fitted by pros, if it is worth it to you. If they chambers clean up well, these could be reclaimed nicely, I'd guess.

I agree the stummels should clean up nicely. The ferule's are both loose but fit properly. The stems are the issue.

The 367 and 358 both have Peterson's System 3 in a curve and the P has the old style forked tail on the P. The 358 has Made in England in a circle format placing the pipe between 1938 to 1947? I really like the texture on that one. The 32? pipe at the top left has a crack in the ferule; someone did a bit of a sloppy job gluing it in place. I will have to research what can be done with that. For some reason I'm thinking the three pipes were made in England.

you are correct that the system 3 pipes are pre 1947.Peterson replaced the system 3 with system standard stamping during this period.

where are you in the world?

you can get replacement stems made.I have used Northern Briars in England he will replace a stem with a pre molded one for £20 or a handcut one for £30.

Peterson will also replace a stem but their turnaround time is quite long.If you ar in the states I am sure you will find suggestions on here if you search the forum.

Hi Paul, I'm in Canada. I will keep the option open of buying a new replacement stem but my first choice would be to find vintage stems. It might be unrealistic but I'd like the finished pipes to be authentic as possible. That's why I'm trying to identify the correct shape numbers. I might run across a beater pipe on ebay selling for parts or repair that would have the right stem. Or some of the repair fellows might have stems in their odds and sods box. You never know. Thanks for your input.

Thanks Al. It's always good to hear referrals. I enjoy reading his blogs on his pipe website. I think I will send all the pipes to him for refurbishing.
