I have to admit that I am apprehensive about posting this. I am a born procrastinator and I probably need someone to shame me in to getting in shape. I'm over 70 and the typical pipe smoker in that I am a contemplative sort of guy who likes nothing more than a chair and a good book, some good music and my pipe. I've never been a dedicated excerciser but for the ten years before I retired, I worked in a box store and actually found the work kept me in shape. I put in miles a day and lifted stuff regularly.
I see that jiminks does is regular walks and still manages to smoke umpteen pipes a day. I admire that.
Anyone else want to start a regimen and post our progress daily on this thread? Frankly I would appreciate the support.
Thanks.

Arizona?
It’s a dry heat. If your Dr says it’s ok to move, then move. Every day just a little more.

It’s as simple as that. If I were to write a Fitness/Diet book, it would comprise two chapters and four words.

Chapter one: Move more.
Chapter two: Eat less.

Do a little something and a little more each day. Those pops and creaks will go away and be replaced with a pliant, healthy spring to your step.

It’s easier to maintain than regain. Talk to your Dr and get into some good habits...

to balance out our bad one!

Good luck to you!

I'm in, though I am not sure I can be consistent. I am recovering from radiation and still have to have hormone treatment, so my energy is extra low. I need to build up my strength and endurance.
Right now it's walking, which I do twice or more a day with my faithful hound. Today I did 4,000 steps, and I should do more.
Good for you, man. Walking is where I will start. I live on rural dirt roads so walking will get my muscles and tendons in shape. The aerobic part will come in time. I'm a cancer survivor (prostate) too, and I have two artificial hips. Thanks for the encouragement, and keep the faith!

I'm not volunteering anything but my 2¢. I struggle from low motivation, myself. It sounds like you've recognized one motivator that works for you, which is a social element. I recommend that you also look within your real life community for people to walk with. That more tangible aspect may help as well.

My motivator is mostly necessity. I feel good, I'm young, and it doesn't seem important. However, if it's hunting season, I'll walk miles a day through scrub without complaint. If I need to turn my soil, I'll work that spade like it's an exercise machine.

But, maybe that's not an issue for you. Remind yourself how important this is, (if it is).

I do a lot of walking. For work and for fun. Helps a lot. Get an mp3 player for the walks you can dig on some of your favorite music.
Oh and remember progress is progress. If you loss a pound that's one pound you don't have. If you can walk a few more minutes without feeling strained that's a few more minutes. The getting in shape war is won little bits at a time.

Since I started smoking pipes a little over 3 years ago, ass sitting has been something I've struggled with too, so this is a timely thread as I've just recently gone back to the gym now that the lock down restrictions have been eased. I'm a big believer in the importance of retaining muscle mass, especially as we age. I'm 54 now and even though I'll never be the stud muffin I use to be, or at least thought I was, it's more important than ever to lift some weights.

I'm going every other day for an hour, alternating upper body and legs and throwing in some abdominal work each day.

Congratulations on making the decision to exercise! You don't need to run a 7min mile, any form of exercise will do. Walking does really make a difference. I live by Navy Pier and it's 1/4 mile from the front to the end. I started walking it every day and you would not believe I was down 10 Lbs , and wasn't even trying. Started drinking diet soda as well. The problem is all in your mind. If you allow yourself to make excuses, you will never get started. Just do it no matter how you feel on any given day. This is the way...

If you’re on your ass all day and smoking pretty soon your dick is going to stop working completly. Blue pills won’t help either. A sedentary lifestyle won’t do you any favors with dementia either

Not sure if you’re into podcasts, but they’re a great thing to listen to while you walk/hike/workout. Literally any interest or hobby you have there is a podcast that discusses it. Helps relieve the boredom on walks/hikes for me.

There’s plenty of virtual workout/fitness routines if you feel a little weird/embarrassed. You won’t even have to leave your house. If you decide to join a gym there’sundoubtedly many smoking hot young women there. Since you’re in you 70s they won’t be threatened or think you’re hitting on them, they’ll think your just a sweet old man.

Not sure if you’re married and have kids/grandkids, but I’m sure there’s someone you’d like to stick around for the next decade or two. You really so at you’re final years to be out of shape with poor and failing health because you couldn’t bother with some moderate exercise?

I just started back hanging sheetrock and boy... I'm so damn sore. I hang 12ft wall boards until I get 40 peices. If I get there by 1:30 then I'm done for the day, so the whole day is a mad dash.

I took a break and had an office job for a year, and boy did I revert to my fat shape fast. It's hard to replace a physical job with exercise. At this point I can either hang sheetrock or turn into a lardass. I gained about 40 pounds in that year.. my activity went down and my hunger stayed up.

Back before I was married I could go out drinking and stay lean.. I called my 3 day drunks "blowing the cobwebs out". I could lose 15 pounds in a weekend.

I've got exercise equipment and lots of other things to promote exercise, yet I procrastinate as well. I would jump on board for this though. Not really a new year new me thing, rather a new day new play kinda deal.

Walking is definitely good and it’s low impact too. My alarm goes off at 6am each morning and I am straight up, have a glass of water and am out the door in less than 10mins and back by 6:30am. I have hills to walk up and down otherwise I might walk a little longer. I do this 6 days a week.

Day 1 is always hardest. After that you will want to keep going.Listening to podcasts is worth doing while you walk.

Good on you Edger...............
Took some balls just to make that post.......
I agree with the others. Walk a bit, maybe 100 yards first day, but every day push yourself a bit further............... Smoke a pipe while you're walking, but each day, go just a bit further. You'll get there, It just takes time........... puffy
