Hi folks, I was wondering if you could please share your input with me? I have two on the work bench. A Devil's Anse, and another Free hand that will have a partially smooth rim and the rest plateaux. The Devil's Anse will have a slightly convex. Here is pic of them both sitting opposite.

Both are drilled and shown with my stem of choice. Drilling is tight and bang on. Each have a delrin tenon in a vulcanite stem.
What do you ladies and gentlemen think should be next?

Of those two pipes, the devil anse but I'd like to see it with a tapered stem.
If you're on about another shape after these, I'd like to see a classic billiard.

Clickklick I'm just asking which of the two shapes I have on the go as shown in the picture; which shape would people like to see. Another free-hand or my take on a Devil's Anse.

That's it.

I vote for a Devil Anse, but only because I like that shape more than freehand shapes. Strictly as an aside, I am wondering how the shape is becoming known as a "Devil's Anse". The way I understand it, the shape was named in homage to William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, of feud fame. How does the possessive "Devil's" get in there?

The Devil Anse style has never grabbed me, although I like and own several short pocket pipes of different styles. So for me, the freehand piques more curiosity. Because these pipes are in fact free style, they can go way right or way wrong. I've seen a dozen of them in an antique store, none of which I'd care to own, and I've seen some, and own several, that ring my chimes at first sight. It's partly subjective, and partly a feel for doing something with the shape.

The tasteful yet revealing evening dress will take a bit more time...

My understanding of the Devil Anse shape is, as Aldecaker mentioned, it received it's name from that particular person and historical setting. Ever since I saw the shape on Dave Neeb's website I have wanted one. Here is his comment on the shape.

"Since Kevin Costner smoked a pipe like this in “The Hatfields and the McCoys,” the shape has been called a “Devil Anse” after his nickname. So here’s my take on the shape."

Since I can not afford one, I decided I would make myself one. I'm finding that making my own pipe when I see a shape I like, curbs my PAD.
