Hello puffers of the world,
I had a bit of a spree on ebay recently and bought a few pipes, some of which I'm looking at selling on and some of which I just might have to keep. Amongst the haul were a couple of petersons, a few hardcastle special selects and a couple of barlings.
It was one of the barling pipes that I was a bit confused about. To my dismay, one of its previous owners had super glued a nasty looking oxidised stem to the shank and had seemingly pushed until the interior of the stem had moulded around the screw fitting on the shank. I've removed the stem with a bit of rubbing alcohol which broke down the glue well enough and was lucky that it didn't affect the stain on the pipe. Since getting that off, I've started to prepare the pipe for a re-buff with some carnauba wax but noticed the markings and realised that I hadnt a clue what I was holding. I've taken a couple of photos and was wondering if the house barling expert/s would mind letting me know what I've got on my hands.
All the best,

Thats brilliant, thank you very much... I shall have a further read. Before I say it, I know that a pipe that smokes well to the owner can be priceless... They all have stories and people obviously get to know their pipes. But before I get to know this one And probably become attached, (and bearing in mind I'm a university student with limited (at best) funds at times) is it a keeper or would it pay for my food for a while? That is of course, if anyone knows.
Cheers,

By way of disclosure you should know that sablebrush52 contributed heavily to the Pipedia article about Barling (to which coalsmoke provided the link above). He knows more about Barling pipes that anyone else of whom I am aware.

A couple of things, the pipe is a "post family era" pipe, in other words late 1962 or later. 3 is the size number, 80 for the Zulu shape, and 9 for a flat stem (also made with a tapered stem). The screw in fitting was something done when the replacement stem was fitted, and not original, the pipes had conventional push tenon/mortise stem fittings. Your best bet, I would say, is to send it to a professional pipe repairman for a new stem, keep it and smoke it. The other pipe, going to need some pictures. For the 3809/3804, see here,

Sorry to come so late to the party. Been a busy day. Looks to me like the tenon is stuck in the mortise and has unscrewed itself from the stem. Dripping alcohol from a syringe into the area surrounding the tenon over a period of 20-30 minutes should loosen it up unless it's really been glued in. I've had a couple of tenons unscrew from their stems because they were really stuck tight and the cement used to hold them to the stem had failed. The drip alcohol method, which I learned from Ronni Bikacsan of Night Owl Pipeworks, did the trick.
The pipe is post family era, but appears to be one made in the Barling factory. It was made between late 1962 and 1968.

Please post images of your other Barling. Perhaps I can provide you with some information.
I'm guilty of having written the Pipedia Barling page, though both Jonathan Guss and Tad Gage were co-conspirators. It's a work in progress and gets revised when there is significant new information.

Thanks everyone for your help... It's great to get to know what I've bought a bit better. :D I'll try the alcohol and let you know how it goes. The reason for my thinking it was a gluing issue was that the stem is definitely not original and it looks as if the glue had spread around the outside of the shank by a clumsy application. A shame really because I really like that pipe. If all else fails, then I'll send it off to a professional so they can get it sorted for me :)
Below are some pictures of the other barling that I have. I don't think it's anything special but it, again, would be nice to know what I've got.

I've bought a few other pipes but I'm hesitant to post them on this thread because I don't want to veer off topic of the title. I bought them originally to renovate as wood working is a hobby of mine and want to sell them on. Problem is, I have no idea how much their worth (if anything). Would you guys suggest me making a new thread? Or is it the sort of thing that's best left for me to work out? I'm kind of new to this and am learning as much as I can but I don't want to over/under charge anyone for something.
