This was given to me the other year and has been sitting in my desk drawer. I will probably never smoke it as it is not meerschaum. I have no idea who made it or how old it is or even if it is briar? Answers on a post card please.

It's simple, not over the top. I like the squared off shank and stem, and that the bowl looks big at least in the picture, but the pipe its self doesn't look super long. I used to dislike all straight pipes. Recently I've seen a few I'd smoke. That's one of them.
0 out of 10 for lighting and photography but it appears to be a cross grain block of briar from what I can see. Seemingly very thin walls. First guess is molded stem. No nomenclature I would guess basic Italian basket pipe, but that is pure speculation from two pictures.
I have the exact same pipe, it was given to me at a pipe show as “free gift with purchase” from a vendor who was selling tobacco I believe. I think it was Chicago, Maybe St Louis.

Don't laugh but we did think about it. There was talk of a 'John Cotton's Pipe' line of branded pipes. I looked into producing a line of 'War Horse' clay pipes but trying to find a viable manufacturer that would have done low runs at reasonable prices sort of killed off that idea.
I have a friend that made that.

Kind of looks like it was originally a meer-lined pipe.
I was thinking meer lined that that never got the lined. A couple years ago I saw some decent sized batches of minus-meer pipes like that being sold out of Germany.
