That said there has been constant exploration of the oceans, it’s just harder than spaceflight in some ways.

You’d think that the opportunity to make fundamental discoveries would drive more ocean research. Hell, there are tons of poorly described and unknown species in the easily accessible parts of the oceans. Lots of “easy” pickings for academics.

When I was about 10 years old, my dad took me on a "deep sea" fishing adventure while on a trip to Florida.
The ones where 68 people drop a line with a piece of shrimp straight down and wait for one of three breeds of fish to bite.
I'm not sure what fish it was, but when I pulled up the first one, it's eyes were bugged out of it's skull and it had no fight left. I wanted to return it to it's home, but the guide said, "your fish is dead, they all die". I noticed other fish being caught with their swim bladders sticking out of their mouths, and their eyes bugged our. I told my dad I didn't want to fish anymore. He said that was fine, we just looked at the scenery and had a tour of the boats engine and navigation system. That was FAR more interesting than exploding fish. :)
