I never intended to purchase US bicentennial items, it just sort of happened. And let's face it, the Savinelli Linea 76 isn't actually a bicentennial pipe, it's a centennial pipe. But hey, can I help it that it's the same year as the US bicentennial?
It started in the mid 80's when I wanted to buy a Ruger Blackhawk .357, so when I went to my favorite pawn shop where I lived, they had two. A nice clean one, and an older one that showed some holster wear. However, it was stamped "Made in the 200th year of American LIberty", which was 1976. I thought it was a little more interesting, and it was $25 cheaper, so my first unplanned bicentennial item. Ten years later, I had a case of GAD and decided I needed another shotgun, and a local sporting goods store had some old stock from another store that had closed, and that included some Remington 870 Wingmasters. One of them was a bicentennial edition, and they were all $199, so you know, get the more interesting one, my second unplanned bicentennial item.
Now we come to the pipe. My wife has been agitating for a Savinelli pipe, that was obviously different from the three we already had, so she found this Linea 76 on ebay, and had to have it. Fortunate for me it didn't get very high, ($31) so she got a new pipe that needed a little work. Some bad staining from something spilled? on the briar, and a burn on the side of the shank and bowl rim. I managed to clean it up to her satisfaction, so she's happy. I thought it was funny that it was made the same year as two of the guns I had, so I decided it was now part of the unplanned bicentennial collection. Who knows what's next? Not really planning on anything though.
On a side note, I have not been able to find anything much about this pipe, other than it was made for Savinelli's 100th centennial celebration in 1976. I guess they were sold in pairs for the most part, but I can't seem to find anything about the somewhat odd styles they made, or the briar they used. Anybody got any info on these?
