Hi Guys,
I know there are many here who's skill far surpasses mine.

I have been using a set of shelves that my Grandfather made in his last year in school.

Shop Class I suppose... duh... that was 1915.
I decided to stop using it as a place to keep my pipes and turn it into a pipe rack.

All that is left is to replace the hanging hardware, replace the Eagle, added in the 40's, and wax it.
Let me know what you think. Of course before I stained it I had to test drive it and try some different pipe configurations.
Well here goes:

Great job. I like the idea of combining an innovative design with an heirloom item.

Hey Space,

If you are referring to the crossed dowels in the back, they were part of the original design. Not functional just decorative. (and a pain in the arse, I might add.)
The parallel dowels are very functional. You just insert the pipe stem between them on the level that fits the pipe. Straights and quarter bents on the lower shelf, full bents upper shelf and CW's in the single short brackets on edges and in the middle.

Please be my guest Frosty, just experiment with the angles of the dowels.
They are 7/8" from center to center, but the angles vary a little and the three dowel runs have extra support provided by the for lack of a better term three holed sliding washers. they are adjustable. So you can provide extra strength for the heavier pipes.
Have fun.....

Side note: I can still count to ten without taking off my shoes. That scroll saw is aggressive.

There have been a couple photos of pipe rack/displays that utilized dowels to hold the pipe by the stem. And, I had been wanting to modify the shelves somehow to display my pipes. I didn't want to drill any holes or change the original design, so I just let it brew in the brain housing group until the answer came. It has been brewing for a while.
Thanks guys, it was a fun project. I should finish everything up this evening, and I'll post some pictures when it's in its place of honor, fully loaded of course.

Thanks Guys,
Well here is the finished product, after six coats of wax and replacing the eagle.
The first picture is of the nail I had to use to replace the eagle. They are ones that were originally used. Of course the first thing I did was drop one. :)

The rest left right and straight on. I'm sorry for the quality... cell phone pictures.
