Hi all!
I've recently taken up the pipe smoking hobby, having been a cigarette smoker for some time. Before starting my collection and taking up the habit I read up a lot on some basic "how to" and "beginner" guides as well as watched a lot of youtube videos both explaining how to smoke a pipe, and reviewing pipes. Anyways, I have to say I am loving it so far! Having found this forum though, I began wondering what more experienced pipe smokers would have to say about my choice in pipes while starting out the habit, which is why I'm placing this thread in pipe talk rather than the beginner section . Here's what I have:
Peterson Pipe Standard System 317
Peterson Killarney 150
Peterson System Smooth 31
Peterson Harp 999
Savinelli Porto Servo Smooth 614
Savinelli Minuto Rusticata Straight
Savinelli Minuto Smooth Bent
Mr Brog Ex Large Outsized XOLM
Mr Brog Lumberjack
Mr Brog No. 30
Mr Brog No. 51
Mr Brog No. 37
Lucienne 14″ Churchwarden
The most expensive was the Savinelli Porto Cervo which I don't intend to smoke until I've gained some more experience (only bought it because I fell in love with the look of it), and the cheapest were the Mr Brog's. I have to say I'm loving the Mr Brog pipes. The look, feel, and weight of them is fantastic and they smoke brilliantly. The Peterson's are great too and I have found they smoke well, but I enjoy some of the larger chambered Mr Brog pipes when relaxing at home. The Lucienne has novelty value I guess, but having removed the filter and metal thing in the stem I find its a fun and enjoyable smoke. Having said that, I wouldn't have bought it if I knew it was a Chinese made pipe.
Does anyone else have some of these pipes? I would be particularly interested in anyone's experience with the Savinelli Porto Cervo or Minuto pipes, as there seems to be a lot of discussion on here about Mr Brog's and Peterson's.
So, have I started on firm ground or have I blundered into things? On a side note, I noticed that two of my pipes had a metal filter I guess you would call it, in the end of the stem where it joins the pipe. I've removed them and haven't used them at all, but was wondering whether they are needed at all, what they do in terms of taste and experience and if they are just sort of optional like other filters.
