The latest book to grace my shelves is something of an oddity. It is a limited edition 1904 reprint (250 copies only) of a 1676 tract on Virginia with an emphasis on tobacco production there.
I've only flicked through it and read a few pages but it really looks to be an interesting and informative read. Originally compiled by a surgeon by the name of Thomas Glover it was reprinted from the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and was aimed at those people with an interest in Americana. It covers everything from the climate, geography, the natives people, the flora and fauna with everything in between and with a separate chapter on the method of raising tobacco plants.
Another interesting aspect of the book is it has the library stamp of the Reverend Herbert Maynard Smith (1869-1949) who whilst preaching the gospel found time to write his well known Inspector Frost detective novels. There is a handwritten note on the front flysheet stating 'From a lover of the weed to another" which I find rather quaint.
"Two hundred & Fifty copies only of this reprint of a Paper communicated to the Royal Society in 1676 are issued in the hope that this Account may interest Collectors of Americana".
Regards,
Jay.
