Mayer AZ
EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9)

I have only one meer that was gifted to me probably 25 years ago. It's an SMS lattice carved billiard and it always smokes hot. I'm a slow sipper of my va's and I don't have this problem with my briars and cobs. I've heard everyone say meerschaums are the ultimate in cool and flavorful pipe smoking, but this thing with all it's surface area is a tongue scorcher. What gives?

I've never really found them any different than briar. A pipe regardless of material isn't going to smoke cooler, that's up to drying, packing, and lighting techniques. You'll also hear that you can't ghost a meerschaum. ?

What gives?

Does the same tobacco have the same effect in a briar.

1. Lattice carved meerschaum pipes - the walls are very thin.
2.Bad qualities meerschaum block.

My only meer is a hobby block I carved, and it has that plastic mortise. Mine would smoke cool until the second half of the bowl, then steam, steam, steam.
My solution worked wonders, but it is probably risky:
I drilled my stummel’s draft hole out to 5/32” and drilled the tenon out to 1/8”, I believe. I was going to drill the tenon out to the full 5/32”, but was worried it might’ve not left enough “meat” on the tenon to be sturdy enough. I also funneled the slot quite aggressively. It made a night and day difference, and now it smokes cool all the way to the bottom.

That is exactly what I have done with all my meers. !/8" is the max on the tenon - 5/32" leaves no "meat". This mod makes all the difference in the draw...

I also have a lattice billiard made by Altinay and was smoking it last night(just replaced the 9mm push stem) and it gets really hot too, always has. The smoke coming out the stem is very cool, I figured it was because of the thin walls. It does cool down quickly, but kind of annoying to handle compared to my other sultan head meerschaum which smokes cool to the touch. This Altinay almost heats up like my freaking clay tavern pipe! Haha. Okay not that hot but still....

It does have a slightly restricted draw where the shank enters the bowl, so maybe I'll drill that out as I like a fairly open draw anyway(9/64) or more.

Any tips for drilling it out? Just be careful I guess?
