I have several tampers, I keep coming back to the unassuming Czech tool most of the time. I do have a sentimental attachment to a Savinelli pipe tool (tamper, pick, and knife in brushed metal) that I bought in the late '70s; don't use it much though.

I use the one in the middle. It's my favorite. Don't know why, but I got obsessive about sanding and polishing the aluminum to make it shiny and pricey looking. Anyway, works better than my finger.
I’ve never sanded it, but I do spend some time polishing mine as well. That little “spoon” on the end makes it great for nasal snuff also.

I have 3-400 tampers available in the form of wooden golf tees I've acquired over the years. 2-3 dozen wooden tampers I cut from branches of a cherry tree. 6-7 metal or metal and wood tools that include a tamper. Oh, and a couple of decorative tampers somewhere.

I use whatever is at hand, pun intended.
