I made this pipe cabinet, in my father's shop in 1972. I had graduated from college that year and during summer before I married I knocked this out with some 1/2" pine my dad had laying around. I couldn't afford the one Decatur sold, so using a catalog picture I put this one together. I was putting some pipes away this morning- Barlings on top, Comoys on the bottom - and I just find it hard to believe my cabinet is almost 50 years old. It's sorta like the awareness that hits you when your child hits the big five-o.20210122_084143_compress50.jpg20210122_084156_compress55.jpg20210122_084209_compress69.jpg

I have a very similar story: I made this pipe cabinet in my father's basement hobby woodshop in 1993 after flunking out of college (I did eventually graduate from a different university). It's made of poplar and is full of woodworking errors, but it was the first project I had seen all the way through, beating my urge to set it aside when things got frustrating. For that, it has come with me to every place I've lived for 30 years and it's size determines my pipe collection.

Nice rack and story!

I wonder If you thought you would still be using 50 years later when you made it.
You know when you are young you have NO concept of 50 years or even how fast it comes. So no, didn't even think about it then. I did a doctoral fellowship in Zurich at the C.G. Jung Institute. Jung always taught that one's soul is also in the things we make (as in "soul food"). I just know if it got thrown away, lost, or destroyed in some way I would grieve its loss. Same with our pipes, don't you think?
