I got a chuckle out of the tounge bite ordeal as I remember doing the same thing. The good side of having all that tobacco is that you can store it away and come back to it after your taste gets a little refinement. Judging from your mistakes "list" you've faired well pilgrim and in such a short time too. Being able to recognize what your doing right or wrong will provide for more good pipe smoking experiences than bad.
Not knocking Peterson pipes (I've had a couple) but I've noticed that the price tag has taken the brand out of the reach of good many pipe smokers. Comparatively speaking you can now get a lot more pipe value by looking at other brands in a similar price range. Keep enjoying the hobby!
