My First Bowl of Penzance

So I finally got my first tin of Penzance today. I have been really excited about smoking it for obvious reasons. As a preface, I would like to say that I like all types of tobaccos. Everything from the sweetest aromatics to the most off-putting cigar blends. I've smoked a number of high quality english blends, but this stuff.... :crazy:
The tin aroma is an assault to the nasal cavity. It's dank, pungent and almost makes you wanna cringe, in a good way. It's an acquired smell, in the way that some people like the smell of fuel when they go to the gas station.
What a bizarre and amazing blend this is! Gnarly would be a good way to describes how it tastes. I love it. Definitely unlike any other english I have ever smoked.

Different strokes for different folks. Pipe tobacco is like sex, when it is good, it's great, when it's bad, its still tolerable, just not as much enjoyment is received from it.

I've smoked Penzance once. A buddy had bought a couple of tins, in fact he gave me one, just not opened it yet. I recall it was pretty good, kind of reminded me of Esoterica Tobacciana "And so to bed", which I really do like a lot. So I don't know, I'm gonna have to open this tin here pretty soon and give it another go.

I didnt so much have an issue with the taste of Penzance as I did the loading and burning qualities. I never could get it dried just the way I like it and never could get the flakes broken into small enough pieces, and had a bit of a hard time keeping it lit. The flavor was definitely one of a kind, never had a latakia taste quite like it, but something about it just didnt do it for me. I would buy a tin and have it around for that rare occasion when I would want to smoke it, but like others have said, it wouldnt be an everyday smoke for me.

I tried Penzance once (thanks to sergemoat). I can see why people like it but it won't be my favorite.
I like the Seattle Pipe Club blends better. That may be because I tried the SPC blends first and I like them a lot. I suppose it's best never to compare one tobacco blend to another instead of just accepting it for what it is.
The same with sex.

I like all the Esoterica Tobacciana choices including Penzance, with Margate and Pembroke being my two favorites. The two of them are almost the same, blended with Orientals and Latakia. The only difference is Pembroke is aged with some Brandy or Cognac. If you like English blends, you should give these two a try....

Ahhh Penzance...Yes it was like having sex for the first time when I first tried it in the sence that I was still a noob to the pipe world so I didn't really know if I was doing it right, but it was a memorable experience that I'll never forget.
