My Ebay Dunhill 835 ODB Received

I have to say, I am very thrilled with this purchased. This is not only a Dunhill, but it's the exact style, shape and size I prefer.
I felt I was taking a chance buying this one with no returns allowed, very little description by the seller and just 2 poor photos. However, it arrived and it was in perfect condition. Only needed minor cleaning up. Sanded the stem with micromesh, applied some obsidian oil, waxed the pipe - and voila! An unsmoked version of this pipe is currently going for $685, was able to get this one for $157.
Now the tricky part is figuring out the age/year. I am wondering if it's a 1961 (it appears to have an 01 after the "Made in England"). If anyone can confirm this for me, I'd be much obliged.

I am not sure but I believe it's a group 6. It's over 6.5" long and fairly large in the hand. And I can say that it smokes as well as I had hoped. Easily has the best draw of any of my pipes. Everything about this pipe is quality, from the finish to the perfect cut and fitting of the stem.

I believe the "F/T" (fish tail) is wider at the button than the stem on your beauty, but your stem is obviously an off-the-stummel

And thanks Bradely - I am not up on my groups, so perhaps this is a group 4. I don't see any number in a circle. It is a large pipe, but I need to continue researching and learning.

six, it is awesome looking, congrats man. It looks like a big pipe, as you said probably a group 6. If the bowl is 2 inches, bowl depth of 1 7/8 and a chamber width of 13/16 , it is definitely a 6. Glad it is smoking great for you, at 157.00 it is an amazing steal.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this is a more recent pipe (2001) because the Dunhill logo is inside an oval. As for the size ODB's are either larger then ODA's (group 6+) or are the same size as ODA's but have better grain. I bought a 2001 837 ODB a while back with similar markings and that's what I've been able to find.

ODB's seem to be quite rare as far as I've seen. Very nice!

The bowl is actually 2 2/8" and the bowl chamber is 14/16". It is labeled an ODB, which I thought placed it in the group 6 class, but not 100% sure about that.
And I am reasonably sure the stem is the original. The photo above does make the stem look wider, but i think it's a bit of a distortion. The stem is cut perfectly with the stem.

I believe the OD stands for oversized Dunhill. The OD sized pipes started at what would be a group 6, as in Groups 1-5, then ODA, ODB, ODC and so on. So your pipe would be more of a group 7.

Glad you mentioned that. I only guessed the '61 date because it *appears* to show an "01" after the "made in England" stamp. But the "01" isn't clear (see photo), looks more like an "0" with a vertical line next to it (which is larger than the "0")

When the stunnel (bowl & shank) of the pipe and/or the stem are sanded and/or buffed apart from each other, it can result in "rounding," which creates a noticeable asymmetry at the mating of stem and shank.

Thanks rothnh - it's a good catch, but I think it's the photo showing some distortion. When I view the pipe up close, it looks perfect.

I hate when I spend 15 minutes typing, and only three letters come out! EFP is short for Excellent F**ing Pipe! I agree with sergemoat in that Dunhill didn't stamp the oval logo until later than '61. Anyway, that is an excellant buy at less than $400 for an estate. You did good Buddy! Enjoy!

That's what I thought too. I have yet to figure out what the number (after the "Made in England") on this particular pipe means...
UPDATE: from a little more research, this may be a 2001. I am basing this on the belief that the new Dunhill logo began in 2000. Still unsure about this though.

I believe pipes made after 2000 are numbered "01" for 2001 and "02" for 2002 etc...
