This is not something that I'm proud of, but it's part of me. It's the way I operate...

*Sigh*

So... I inhale. There, I said it. Not every puff but probably at least every other one. Stronger, harsher tobaccos, I inhale less but it still happens over and over. I have tried to fight it. I may be destined to a pipe smoking life of solitude and shame.

You are not alone. I do on occasion as well. Most bowls I don't, but if I've had a particularly rough week I'll take 5 or 6 drags throughout the bowl. Stupid, for sure, but it just calls to me sometimes, that throat hit. Nicotine is a hell of a drug.

It does change the flavor profile a bit as well, which is interesting. I pretty much only do it with Va or Burley based blends. Aros hurt and aren't worth it.

don't say you're confessing to something when a true crime fan is around. I thought oh boy maybe one of those big cases is going to get cracked right here and now. But nah you inhale. Well that's a sticky wicket because it's not a matter of learning something new but unlearning a habit. Which takes time and then makes you wonder why you ever struggled with it in the first place.

Alright... I'm taking names and turning you guys over to Python. We're not going to have any of that hedonism around here.

Aaaa, actually, when I was transferring from cigarettes to the pipe, I had to slip in a little inhale every now and then to satisfy my need for the "lung feel" of smoking. However, I just consciously forced myself to avoid this, to keep smoking a pipe from being worse for me than the cigarettes I was escaping.
But, it's your lungs, do with them as you please.

If you inhale you get no flavors. Try blowing the smoke through your nose, you might be surprised at how much more flavor you get

retrohale > inhale flavorwise for sure. But I wouldn't say there's "no" flavor when inhaled. Definitely don't recommend it though, the throat hit for ex smokers is the only benefit, aside from the obvious instant nicotine wallop, much more flavor when retrohaled, or just smoked normally.

Better to have it off your chest, so to speak. Maybe when you get more into blends you'll get focused on that and phase out inhaling.

Retrohaling is, for me, a given. That’s where it’s at. I mean no disrespect to anyone who doesn’t retrohale, it’s just that it’s a flavor explosion.

I’ve heard it’s done naturally by many of us who have migrated from coffin nails, but I don’t know. I’ve always done it when pipe smoking, right out of the gate.

Hmm .... so maybe this (retrohaling) is what I do sometimes, especially when I really like a particular blend in a particular pipe? I guess I thought channeling a little smoke through my nasal passages while otherwise mainly "sipping" steadily without drawing smoke downward was a kind of inhalation. To be honest, I don't remember "learning" how to retrohale. Sometimes, I'm not even sure I know I'm doing it. At any rate, I do enjoy the experience from time to time - I appreciate the flavor more (but do sometimes notice a mild nic hit).
