I saw that a few days ago. Brilliant isn't the word that immediately leapt to my mind. That said, I bet those two dudes are having a ton of fun, and well, you have to respect that.

I saw that and the first thought was "some kid tried decorating their dad's pipe" and if you think that is awesome send me one of your pipes and my kid will bedazzle it for you. You'll love it!! lol

LOL
No love for the googly eyes?
I dig 'em!

Seriously,

I find "childlike play" to be an important virtue,

and something much lacking in the pipe world.

"When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways." - Corinthians 13:11

I'm just kidding, I'm not that serious. I have no problem with playfulness in pipes, I think Talbert's Goblins are a great example of having fun with your pipes. Beauty is in the eye of the pipe holder! Cheers!

I agree with the Biblical quote,

however,

there is an important distinction between the words childlike and childish.

I absolutely love Mummert's work and his playful side is one of the main attractions besides his obvious skill. This one made me chuckle but a little too whimsical for me. I would much rather have his Lego or Rubik's Cube pipes.

I'm a Weaver collector, and while not my type of pipe, hilarious, and bravo on the collaboration. Just imagine if they were being serious, lego volcano anyone?

That's hilarious!
One of the Victorian/Edwardian era books that I found on tobacco history a while back had a short section on Mesoamerican native pipes, carved from stone in what were described as "whimsical" shapes - human figures, animals, etc., with the designs facing the smoker (as opposed to modern figurals, where the design is normally facing away from the smoker). This pipe definitely reminds me of this idea, that the pipe should bring the smoker some measure of enjoyment (whimsical or otherwise).

Spent a little time with Mummert and Weaver at a dinner at Bruce's house for the pipecarvers at the Nashville Pipe Show...this is exactly what I expect would happen when those two get together...(actually surprised they didn't use one of Bruce's psychedelic blasts...)

That's a great idea!
The the googly eyes would have to be very dilated though!
The soundtrack for such a pipe could very well be this:
