So, Rich's in downtown Portland is having a 25% off sale for the next week or so. I went there today, with some friends. My intent was to help them choose pipes; they're interested in getting started.

And while they browsed, I figured I'd look at the freehands. Started with the Nordings...there were some BEAUTIFUL pipes. However, as my gaze roved over the pipes, I spotted a pipe that made my heart leap. A Molina, and a testament to human ability. Beautiful straight grain on the sides, and delightful birdseye on top. A shape that lets it sit happily upon a table, and a sunny disposition.

There are a couple more photos, but I don't want to post them all here...they are rather large files.

Oh, and I feel that I didn't do this pipe justice...the notecards are worse than my plain desk, after looking at these in post. Lesson learned.
Oh, and a quick question; are Molinas push stems or something else? Because the stem on this one doesn't seem to budge, and I don't know if that is design, or it is a screw in stem or what.

That is a perfect example of the unique tendency pipes have amongst all other items. . . one side seems beautiful to me and the other 'only' pretty.
A very attractive piece though mate, nice acquisition.

That's probably the lighting as much as anything, though I don't begrudge your opinion. I just did a fairly bad job with evening out my lighting.

In response to an earlier post I have to ask this question," When one views a beautilful tree and sees only a dead limb is that person's

view of the beautiful tree impaired?".

I haven't got an answer to that really. I can say it seems like the answer to that should be yes, because that is a more -- some adjective I just can't put my finger on. . . idyllic? --- view of things. . .but I'm really not convinced that is a truth myself. Mostly because it is so idyllic. . . and that word does sound right for it now that I repeat it . . ."wholly beautiful", or whatever the exact definition is. . .that's about right.

I love the look of that pipe! It no wonder you had to buy it, I would have snapped it up in a second! Congrats!

I know nothing about Molina pipes. Actually I have never even heard of them. If you are having problems removing the stem, try putting it in the freezer for awhile so that the wood contracts. This sometimes helps to remove a stuck stem.
Once again, Nice Pipe!
If you are unsure if it is a screw in stem, try turning it counter clockwise when removing it because most screw in stems screw in clockwise and screw out counter clockwise.

I just did a quick search on them and they are made in Italy. All of the ones that I just looked at seem to have push in stems. I saw a couple that look similar to yours and they look to be push in stems as well.

Nice pipe! I think I can honestly say that's the first freehand that would have turned my head in the store, too. Nice combination of the curves and angles. I didn't make it to Rich's when I was in Portland last summer. I might have to rectify that if I'm given the chance.
How did your friends make out?
Simon
